Nervous potential buyer. Yikes!

Looking at Passion and thinking (obsessively) about driving a car that can carry almost nothing.

Also worried about no spare tire AND driving in the winter.....

So help me out here, Cats and Kittens and talk me through this. I've wanted a smart since before they came out and now I'm on the fence.

Talk me through this!!!

Peace,
Greg

I have never needed to carry something that I couldn't fit in my smart. As for the spare, lots of people just get an extra tire and use that. I live in central Kansas and have only had problems when the snow was deeper than the car was tall. When that happens I figure it is a sign that I should just stay home anyway. But after the plows have gone through no problem.

Hi, Greg,

Well, I live in sunny Calif. so can't speak to you about snow, but there are a lot of people here who do drive in the snow and they have had no issues -- Snow tires is the way to go. I have had my smart cabrio for 19 months and have loved every second of it -- it's the most fun car I've ever had and/ or driven (except for a '56 Porsche speedster -- but that's a different animal). You can always rent one and see how you like it. I wanted one for 10 years before they came to the U.S. -- And I'm really really really happy I have my smart!

Hey Greg. May I suggest using the search tool on this forum and typing in "snow" or "winter". Many threads have been started about winter driving and you can read all about how they handle in bad weather.

Also, I always have room to carry stuff. My mother and I went on a weekend trip to D.C. and we fit three suitcases of clothes and toiletries in the back. Have not had a room issue whatsoever.

As for the spare tire, there is a person selling a small spare tire and it even comes with a spare tire cover and a handle for you to take in and out at your convenience.

Since you need to be talked into buying one, it's probably NOT right for you

Just go get something you feel comfortable with

I don't think he needs to be talked into one. I thinks he just wants more information about the car before he makes a purchase. He has to start his research somewhere.

I has the same issues with no spare tire, Greg. I put one behing the drivers seat and in the past two years, 14,000 mile of ownership, I have had no tire issues.

As for winter weather, I assume you mean snow. I decided I would leave the smartie in the garage and drive the 4X4 Jeep Liberty when I have to travel in snow country. You can search snow in advanced search (titles only) and get all you need.

As for driving a car that can carry almost nothing you will be amazed what you can fit in the smart.
Here is a good thread on How much have you fit in your smart?

And Home Depot and Menards rent trucks for a reason.

interesting forum and lots of opinions.... what are people's favorite reasons for driving this car?

if this were Amsterdam, not an eyebrow would be raised when this car went down the street. here in the good ole USA, there are almost as many opinions as people who look at it.
