I would be giving a serious look at the Yaris or standard Civic. Thing you have to remember is that the Hybrids get their best mileage in the city, not the highway, and the standard Civic is already rated at 40 on the highway. Calculate how much you will save in fuel having the hybrid, and then add in the price difference with interest you will pay to save fuel by having the hybrid, and I bet you will see it doesn't add up to getting the Hybrid.
Also, check insurance cost differences, as the insurance on the hybrids is usually more, due to higher repair costs in case of an accident. This will vary by carrier, but I use state farm, and when I was considering a Prius, I was shocked at the increase in insurance I would pay over my 3 series wagon.
Do your research well, and find out what all the costs are before you make any decision.
I would say to consider a Fit also, but it is the same price usually as the Civic, and the Civic actually has a higher fuel mileage on the highway than its smaller relative.
Cars sales are down for all makes too, so there may be some interest rates or other incentives by some brands, and negotiate hard, as serious deals can be made at this time as dealers are hungry to move cars at lower margins if they have to.
