I use Farmers Insurance and my agent had to ask me a few times for the name because she just couldn't believe it, but I got insured just fine. Cost is around the same as my 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer, only a $15 bucks a month more than my '97 Grand Am. Give them the VIN number of the car before you pick it up; that'll give them time to research it. Get insured on day one. It's a new car, the transmission takes learning, and there are a hundred little risk factors that mean you'll want coverage. I'm not saying it's unsafe, but if your chances of an accident are 1 in 1,000 in another car, it's like 1 in 500 in anything you don't already know.
Plus, for the first time in 16 years of driving, I hit road debris that scratched up my new toy with < 70 miles on the odometer, just two hours after getting coverage. Dealer estimated repairs (repaint) less than a couple hundred bucks, so I didn't file a claim. I just accept the fact that Houston roads suck.
But, for the record, the electronic power steering on the smart is nimble! It got me out of the path quick... whatever hit me was a couple feet long, metallic and aimed right at the windshield until I jerked to the right. Any other car I've driven would probably have hit it head on at 65mph.
