New guy from Long Island

Hey everyone! I've been researching the smart fortwo for a little while now, and I decided to test-drive one yesterday. Well unsurprisingly, I fell in love with it, and went back to the dealership today to reserve one.

They said I could go on the waiting list for $99, or I can be given higher priority for $500 (which of course goes towards the final price of the car), so of course I went with the latter. So instead of waiting 6-9 months, I should only have to wait 1-3 months... yay!

This will be my first new car purchase, and I don't think I could have made a better choice. This little car suits my personality and lifestyle so well. I considered other small cars such as the Honda Fit and Toyota Prius, and while they might be more "practical" as far as space, they definitely don't have the character and uniqueness that I look for in a car. The smart more than fills this requirement for me!

Oh and by the way, I ordered a blue Passion with black trim and comfort package.

Welcome!! Higher priority? Would that be an Orphan List?

Most likely, they didn't use that term exactly, but I'd imagine that's what it is. They actually did ask me what colors I "preferred", so it makes sense now that I think about it.

i was in the same position with my jeep cherokee. the smart was my first new car and i totally fell in love with the car after the test drive. You're going to be totally amazed at the amount of space in the lil fella once you start spending time in it. I already took it to Boston From LI and last weekend i was in the berkshire area of of western Mass.. Welcome. Let us know when it gets here.

Congratulations, I'm confident you'll have great fun with your new Smart. I live on the Jersey side of the NY metro area and have been enjoying mine for the last 5 months. It does fine on all the local roads and interstates. And, it just gets better and better and more fun to drive with each passing week!

Which dealership are you using, roslyn or smithtown? I reserved on August 17th 2008, configured on august 25th 2008, got my dde for 11/14-2/8 and the dealer called and said it will be in by the second week of december 08. So maybe you should reserve anyway since it seems to be only a 4-6 month wait on long island. And the dealers will add lots of extras at both dealerships so if you care about that then deff make a reservation. It can't hurt

Congratulations on your choice, you won't regret it. I had my orphan in five weeks. I did my $99 reservation on line and put a $500 deposit down at the dealer in February. They called twice, only had a Black/Black and a Red/Silver the first time. On the second call, I got my Blue/Black - off the lot in April. Than got the $99 back pretty fast. I couldn't have made a Smart er choice! Good Luck!

I started w/ a $99. res and went to my closest dealer in smithtown,LI and paid $500 to get on the waiting list and low and behold the stalk brought me a silver/red orhan. I was convinced that wasn't for me until I went to view MIPOD at the orphanage and low and behold, love @ first sight.......Happy ever after.........PS.. $99 mailed back several weeks later from SMARTUSA......Cheers
