I received an email, then a call from SmartUSA? indicating I would receive my car in the Jan/Feb 2009 time-frame. The local dealer said they can't notify or confirm my car is being built, shipped, etc., until approx one month before the vehicle is shipped from the plant.

Is this the normal time and process?

It pretty much sounds like normal time and process. It takes about a month for the Bremerhaven, Germany to East coast - Baltimore or Jacksonville...west is Long Beach I believe and add a couple of weeks. Places in between...can't tell you.
It took me ~11 months to get my car....reserved on March 20, 2007 to delivery on Feb 8, 2008...Right in the middle of Upstate NY Winter but I was still glad to get it anyway.

well.....I didn't know smartusa was notifying folks so far out about delivery...must be something new. The dealer is right about not knowing anything until 30 days from build. THe DDE will be your next closest thing to estimated this. From what I can tell, the start of the 90 DDE window corresponds closely to its build date. You didn't mention when you reserved, but I think I noticed it elsewhere - June '07? An 18 month wait is abnormally long...but what can you do?

The wait is not a problem for me. Let me also backup and say when I received my initial email, I never got a confirmation reply. So I called them. They confirmed they received my email and the rest is as posted.
