Radio won't turn off

Just before I turn off the ignition I turn off the radio. The next time I start up the car the radio turns on. Does anyone know how to turn off the radio so it stays off? This is different behavior from any car I ever owned before.

nope. i just make sure that i turn it down before i shut the car down, that way when i start the car the radio isn't blasting.

I've noticed too, that little quirk, the radio comes on every time I start the smart

I contacted Smart Corporate today (Richard) and asked why radio 9 does not remember that it's turned off and always comes back on when the car is started. I was told that this is how it works. Radio 10, however, remembers that you turned it off and stays that way (so they told me.)

This is not acceptable to me as it's unlike the behavior of even the cheapest radio I've had in any car I've owned. I plan to write a letter direct to Mr. Penske in Michigan about this issue.

I have radio 9 and mine does not do that ever

what is penske going to do about it? he's not the president of Grundig or whatever. lol.

there are bound to be quite a number of things about the smart that will be unlike anything else you have ever owned. if that sort of thing is a deal-breaker for you, then the smart may not really be your type of vehicle. the car is loaded with quicks and oddities and unique factors which will either charm you or annoy the heck out of you. either way, it is unlikely those oddities will be bred out in future generations as that is partly what makes a smart a smart and not a yaris or fit or some other generic vanilla same as everything else vehicle. you know?

Why? Penske didn't design the radio. He just distributes the cars in North America. You'd be better off contacting Smart GmbH.

jerryd - Why waste the time and energy contacting anyone but your nearest sound shop and replace the radio9 with a nice Alpine or Clarion with new speakers. Then you could take a sledge to radio9 and turn it off forever!!!

I dont know,man.You cant even get the car delivered in the same freakin' year you get a confirmation number on it.Do you think that Pensky can do anything about the radio.Its all out of his control.He is only the distribution stream here in the US.
