Has anyone been able to have a remote starter installed on the Smart?

Futures. I looked into this issue when our car was delivered in February. I was told that it would void the warranty as it was considered a major alteration.

There are horror stories out there on after market shops butchering up the cars with bad installations.

Our Smart dealer (Bloomfield, Michigan) wouldn't touch It. A2Jack

While most smart cars can accept remote starters, the trick is to find out what security protections are used in the key fob of the car and wether current defeat mechanisms are compatible with it. Keep in mind the smart car uses an electronic starting that I think determines not only how long to keep the starter engaged, but is computer controlled. So its really SMART! You are going to be hard pressed to find a compatible starter. However I think Mercedes and Smart would be Smarter if they came up with a suitable design and offered it to it's customers. I don't know why they've waited so long. Clearely it would be a popular way to increase aftersales profits...

Remote starting a car and letting it sit is a good way to have it stolen. It is also tough on the motor. The best way to warm up a car in cold weather is to start the motor, and start moving after about a minnute. this allows fluids to move around and it will warm up faster than sitting at idle. Years back when I worked in a repair shop, I always had a bunch of cars come in with the exhaust systems full of ice from remote starters. People would remote start cars, run them for a bit, then shut them off. That would let the water vapors build up in the exhaust and freeze. If they would have driven them enough to blow out the exhaust, it would not have been a problem.

It doesn't take that long to warm up a smart. the interior is small enough, and the motor is small enough to just get in and drive.
