Replacing factory tires

I am a mechanical novice to say the least. I want to get better tires for my smart. What should I look for? The tires I chose should do well in rain here at home. I had to sign a release that said that chains are not allowed yet in CA, so I might need something that could take their place if I go up to my daughter in Paradise CA(usually people with snow tires or radials don't need chains and it is only for a couple of miles into town . My sister-in-law says the Italians call the smart spinnys because they spin so easily on wet roads. Her relatives live in Portofino. Thanks for any insight guys.

Really? Ive seen vids of people TRYING to spin their smarts and cant! Maybe Goodyear. Thats what Toyota gave us when our factory installed continentals wore out after 15,000 miles. Yes, 15,000 of city driving. After that, the traction is much better on our Goodyear tires. Im a bit of a mechanic, but as far as tires, this was the first time in my entire life I had to worry about them. Usually go get 2nd had tires until I got this car, just good enough to pass inspection.

There is not a HUGE selection of tires yet for the Smart. I find no problem with my factory tires.....this winter will be the real test. The 'spinner' thing is more folk lore than truth but remember that was the Smart 450....VERY different than our Smart 451!

Try Greer Enterprises in Wisconsin and ask about Hakkapeliitta.

you should be fine with the stock contis (rated 400 AA); even light snow and ice traction was surveyed as good.
....otherwise there isn't a whole lot out there yet!
