Sales Tax

Hello everyone.
My name is Max and I am shortly to move from the UK to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Once there I intend to buy a SMART car.
Sales tax is just over 8% in Tulsa.
Well, I thought, why not land on the East Coast, go to either New Hampshire or Delaware and purchase it tax free.
Just one problem. Those two States have NO dealers. I thought by now there would be at least one dealer in every State.
I realise there is a waiting list, but I don't even mind a secondhand car.
Other States with no sales tax are much too far away and it would not be economical.

Max,

You might want to check, but most states will charge you sales tax when you go to register your car and get the license plates. Some states will give you credit for the tax paid in one state against your own state tax. I bought my car in Illinois where the dealer charged me 6.25% sales tax, next week when I register it in Indiana I will have to pay an extra .75% because the dealer under collected the state sales tax in Indiana which is 7%. Also depending on the state you may be required to pay property or excise taxes when you register the car. The total for my state of Indiana to register my Passion will be about $1300 all total so I can get my plates which is sales tax on $14634 ($1027) + excise tax for 1 year ($207) + fees ($35-$40).

I hope this helps - unfortunately you can't escape tax in the States either unless you live in a non sales tax state.

Max,

No sales tax in OK just the exise tax, 3%, then tag and title.
On a new cabriolet the total should be about $800 for everything.
We tag ours in a few weeks. 3% also applies to used ones.
