Is a smart right for me?

Hey guys, I'm not exactly a new member but I've been lurking on the forums for quite some time.

The truth of the matter is, I would love to get a smart car. When people ask me why, I can't really come up with an answer other than 'because its a happy car, and makes me smile' (I keep forgetting the fact that its also very economical).

There are only two things keeping me back. First, I'm a bit of a performance oriented driver. On the weekends I like driving through canyons at night and at relatively high speeds. Also, shifting gears manually is an absolute joy for me. I used to have a BMW z4 and I'm currently driving a GTI. (As a little side note and two test drives later, the exhaust note on the smart reminds me of an exotic. It's really really sexy considering this is micro car.)

Second, (I know this is really stupid and I really shouldn't give a sh!t) is the joke factor. I'm a single guy and every now and then I give girls rides to places... I like women, and I'm a little afraid of becoming the laughing stock when they see what I drive. I just can't help but imagine them continuously making fun of me for it. I know I'm not insecure in my masculinity its just, you know, there are plenty of people out there that judge (girls included).

Other than those two issues, I would so give up a hundred bucks for a reservation. Granted I have another year left on my current lease, but after hearing about one year waiting lists and what not, it would seem like the opportune time.

Thanks for your help guys.

If you have nothing to compensate for, get the smart. By your own admission, you like the car and you have driven it enough to make a decision based on more than just having read about it. It essentially comes down to what you decide. You're the one who has to drive it. Fun and attention or Fun and HoHum, another Z whatever.

Its well known amongst the girls that there is an inverse relationship between the size of a man's car and the size of their appendage.

Don't forget the "cute" factor. Women love smart cars. You will have them swarmed around your car...what easier way to flirt is there?

Also, consider getting a motorcycle (either a sportbike or a cruiser) for fulfilling your 'zoom-zoom' desires.... hey, it works for me!

Go for it! As the driver of that '73 VW Beetle you'll feel right at home in the smart, except you'll have A/C, power windows, CD player and all the latest safety gizmos, PLUS a heater that works!

My spin..............

Performance guy...me too. And I still have my muscle cars...but I have more FUN in this car than any of my 'performance' cars. I live in a rural area with LOTS of twisty turny roads. My Smart is tons of fun on these roads. I drive in manual mode at all times. Once you learn the car and it learns you everyone gets along very well!

Now I am married...and most likely older....but every women that sees the car thinks it's cool. Don't know if it's the 'green' aspect, cute factor or what but I have had more women come up and start talking to me (I'm old, balding and....big guy so it ain't me) since I got this car than in the past 25 years! Where was this car when I was 20!

I'd say go for it. We have 2 of them...and my wife is about to order her one so I can have mine back!!!

Just Remember

This car will never give you the excitement of a GTI, however, when it comes to girls, they say, "Big car, small penis."
