Go for it! But I would suggest that you get a passion so that you have the paddle shifters and heated seats.
And yes the smart does attract women.....have fun!
Keeping in mind that it is supposed to be a 'city car' it goes quite well at higher speeds. The female population seems to like the fact that it is small, just like a sports car. Somehow it appears non-threatening and shows you have a economical point of view.
For me its just plain fun to zip around in. I got mione for the fuel mileage and the price. The rest is just a bonus!!
I bought my Fortwo because I am into small cars. I read about the Fortwo in the Minutia magazine and at Zapworld. I saw the video at Smart USA showing a tall big guy getting into the Fortwo with ease. I decided to get one. The good mpg was a bonus. The ones who do make negative (some but not all) are usually guys.
Not needing to compensate for anything at my age, I bought the car for what it is - small, easy to park, economical to drive and last, but not least, fun! Nearly everyone responds to it with a smile - especially the ladies~! Those who don't are usually the guys getting out of their big 4X4s or SUVs at the gas station!
But most folks I've encountered are eager to learn about it and are open to it's positive aspects. The very few naysayers I've encountered I generally respond to with a smile and walk away. . . works for me.
It's the guys who laugh at you, the girls love it especially when you take them out in it.
If anybody says, why have you bought one of those, I say, "if you have to ask, you will never understand".
I can't say if it is the car for you, only you can say that, but I have had my smart roadster four and a half years and never regretted it for a minute, I have never cared what others think of me anyways.
El
what are you looking for a car to do for you...if you still want something zippy and small like the Z4, then I would think the smart would leave you disappointed (if this is the case I would suggest either a Z3 M Coupe {much better then a crappy Z4}, or try a Mini Cooper S or the new MINI JCW). If you are looking for a car to toss around town and something that is edgy/trendy over something that is sporty, then I think that you will be very happy with a smart (assuming you dont need to transport much and rarely have more than one person needed to drive around). Most cars on the market serve some sort of purpose or they would stop to exist as people wouldnt buy them. It all depends on what "you" need it for, because to be quite frankly most people on this site are going to be somewhat bias about the smart because they all own and/or love smarts
Wow... Guys thanks so much for all your input. Truth of the matter is, the smart is like this secret love affair of mine.
None of my friends know I want one, but everytime I see one it's like I have to get one. Funny thing is, my friends seem to view me as sorta macho (I do my own work on cars and worked at pep boys as an installer. I'd always finish work with jet black hands and grease on my face [before I'd wash them of course]). So me showing up in this would be a total trip.
By the way, I know this is a little unnessasary... But I read that the passenger seat folds down. Is their enough room to lie down in that area?
Thanks guys.

It does fold down. Whether or not there is enough room for you would depend on how tall you are and whether or not the tail gate is up or down.
I think this whole image thing is just something that I'll grow out of, thankfully... In any event I think I'll put in my reservation in the coming weeks.
From a performance point of view, I tend to agree with the saying, "It's more fun driving a slow car fast then a fast car slow."
