Smashed up smart

Alas, I have smashed in the front of my new passion. Loved the car, showed it to many and handed out brochures but several weeks ago I smashed in the front end. The other small car had little damage but my smart looks terrible ! It was written off, mostly due to the unknown availability and prices of replacement parts. I have the chance to buy it from the insurance company but can find so little information to know if this is a good or foolish idea. Having inspected it, I am convinced that the steel frame is unscathed. The non metal front frame is well and truly mashed and of course the steering wheel air bag went off. The crash was about 20 mph supposedly so I am amazed at the outcome. Writing in case there is any interest in the result but also I am seeking advice.

Have you taken it to your dealer's service dept for evaluation?

Unfortunately, I can confirm that delivery time for parts is a real problem. After having my car for barely a week, it's been back at the dealer for 4 weeks waiting for a replacement parking brake mechanism. The part is supposed to be there any time now, I'm actually hoping I finally get my car back this week...

I have to wonder if anyone in the supply chain at Smart realizes that the same parts that are used to create the car can be used to repair it. If they make even one more car on the assembly line, surely they can find the parts to repair a front end. To me it's mostly a matter of logistics and communication. The parts have to exist; if your individual dealer can't find them, you may have to look harder on your own or get assistance from multiple dealers.

This needs to be brought to the attention of the people in charge. Is Dave Schembri still open to direct communication? If anyone can get the right people involved, he can.

This is of high importance not only to the individual, but to the brand. Insurance write-offs due to unknown repairability are going to raise everyone's rates and cause denial of coverage, leading to zero purchases. Before that happens, the mere reputation that the car's "disposable" is going to grow and ruin the brand.

You may have some luck if you contact a SMART center in Canada for advice and parts. The cars have been available in Canada for a couple of years and they have more experience. I contacted the SMART Centers in St. Catharines and Toronto for advice and technical questions before buying my car.
