Well, I drove my new Smart to church last night and after the service found about 20 parishioners gathered about the tiny car for a closer look. I had planned ahead and brought along a bag of Smarties candies to hand out. Soon everyone was laughing and smiling, asking to sit in it, and pumping me with questions. It was like a Smartie-party in the parking lot!
As I am 6'3" and 215lbs, the most common question was, "How do you FIT in that thing?" My response was, "Try it for yourself". People were astonished at the room inside and wondered how the car could be bigger on the inside than on the outside!
One fellow admitted that he had been on the $99 reservation list for several months, but changed his mind and cancelled. After sitting in my car and getting a feel for it, he said, "I think I may have to change my mind again".
Some folks clearly thought the car was a joke and walked away shaking their heads, but most seemed genuinely impressed. A few had never heard of the Smart car before (is that possible?) and thought it was a customized golf cart or the like. Of course I got the clown-car comments, as well as, "Did you steal this off a ride at Disneyland?" Overall the tenor was jovial and I think at least one or two people may be seriously considering getting their own Smart after seeing mine.
I know that I will keep that bag of Smarties in the car for awhile. They seem to be a fun way to break the ice and get people thinking "Smart".
Thought you might enjoy my little story...
