....... smart owners understand the car, We Get It!! they don't have a clue, and until you get one, you won't understand what we as owners go through daily, the fun-O-metor is maxed out, after you drive yours for just one day, and you find yourself taking the long way home time and time again,Then and only then you too will Get It....
Just keepin it Real......
You nailed it H2! I even take the long way into work, not just home.
One more thing...
I've had this car for 21 months and still every time I go out, someone takes my picture. It's like a short cut to rock stardom!
Thanks again for the replies. I think Im going to take try and take another test drive on monday. The one I had yesterday was very short, compounded by a very bad friday rush hour. Monica, the sales lady, and I spent more time chatting with each other sitting at stops, than I did really driving the car. She said she has never seen it so crazy around the dealer on a friday rush hour and maybe I should take another ride. I think if I get another ride though, it is probably going to cement my descision in the smarts favor.
By all means, take a second or even a third drive. No sense in buying something you aren't sure about. One thing I did notice right away was the placement of the manual window crank. it is right where mu leg rests against the door. I did make it beter by moving it 90 degrees on the post. I would suspect the electric windows wouldn't have been the same issue.
Beardo - you sound like the way I was...I have been wanting a Smart since they were first introduced. Yesterday, on Halloween Day I bought my Passion...my dealer (Crown Smart Center) is about 100 miles from where I live...drove down and test drove three different colored Smart Passions and a Brabus... bought a 2009 Passion Blue with Black Tridion with the comfort package at 1.9 %. I love it. I also owned Harley's and other motorcycles and now own a Boss Hoss and a Jeep. However, I must admit the Smart car is more fun and smiles...I like it...I like it alot! Go ahead and get it...you won't go wrong.
Caution, Beardo: do NOT buy a smart car if you are a shy introvert or do not like talking with total strangers at least two times a day, typically at stop lights, quick-stop shops or gas stations.
Glad to hear you are going back for a test drive again on a Monday.
Weekends are never the time to test drive because the sales folks are usually to busy to give you the time you deserve.
Get out on the road. Spend time in auto. Spend time in Manual. Learn how to jump back and fourth on the fly.
I know your looking at a pure, but drive a passion and see how the paddle shifters work. Find out that they can be confusing during a turn and you may stick with the pure.
Drive stop and go, and make sure you spend some time at Highway speeds (yes its a real car and can drive on the highway)
And while your at it, count the seats and make sure that will work for you.
You would be surprised how often someone comes on here who wants to ditch their smart and one of the complaints it "no back seat".

LOL, Im fully aware the vehicle only has two seats. Funny you mention that though cause I started my new car search by reading consumer reviews on the NADA site for all the cars I have been looking at. I read two negative reports on the smart and both parties commented on the lack of storage space and/or room. A person has got to be blind (probably blind with buying something new) not to notice how small the car is compared to a 'regular' car. It will be plenty big enough for me. Im not married, no kids (unless you count my dog, which is like a kid that never grows up) and the only thing I would like to be able to haul every once a blue moon is my dual sport Honda XL600, which only weighs 300 pounds soaking wet.
As for my time at the smart dealer, quite unexpected. I like the cusomer service I received at all times. From walking through the door and being greeted by the receptionist (a MB dealer???) to people I just passed in the hall, to stepping through the doors for the smart section. Monica (my sales lady) really took her time with me and never rushed. I appreciate that. She wasnt trying to sell me the car, she was there to point out some of the not-so-obvious things about the smarts and answers all my questions, and really just let the car speak for its self. I cant say that about the other car dealers. Each car I went to look at, I did research before hand. Monica was smart (sorry, couldnt help it) enough to ask me if I had read up at all on these, and therefore, I suspect, she approached the sales path differently. I traditionally really hate going to dealers to buy a car. I really hate it. I hate someone trying to push something down my throat. BUY BUY BUY unknowing stupid customer, is how I feel when walking into a dealer. This is why Im planning on going back to smart. Yes, I gotta love the car, but if I cant stand to go to the dealer, that taints everything!!!
Sorry for the rant. Cant wait to go back on Monday!
I used to hate my 70 mile daily commute. Now, it's my favorite part of the work day. That is for all the prior mentioned reasons. Actually, you can't find much in the way of negative comments from on a smart site but that's because we are the enlightened ones. I was just joking with the high and mighty enlightened stuff but we do know fun. We own smarts.
