Congratulations! I think you've come up with something new about the transmission and I've been lurking here for over a year...

i bought it when it had 500 miles
i found out the previous owner had it looked at cause of a engine light (gas cap issue)
its just not shifting smooth and its an "09"

The sound you hear when you rock the car back and forth without the parking brake engaged could just be the normal sound of the parking pawl.

"The mechanical park pawl is operated by the electronic selector lever module control unit via a cable."

Quit rocking the car back and forth and it will stop.

Don't know about any tinging noises - never heard any on mine. But even with an 09 or and 08 with the updated software the shifting will never be "smooth" when compared to a true automatic.

Can you describe the noise a bit better?

How many miles are on the car?

First, I'd try this:

Second, I'd do a transmission fluid change. It's very easy and rather inexpensive. You'll just need 3 quarts of a good synthetic 75W-90 GL-4 gear oil and about 30 minutes of time.

Here's a novel idea:

Have you talked to your dealer?

A related issue may have been experienced here but there wasn't any feedback from the SCoA populace.
