Just signed in while doing a Google for "trunk space" info on a Smart car. Am seriously thinking of purchasing/ordering one as all my driving is in a small city in the Ohio Valley. Only other occupant is a Westie. But I do purchase a rather large amount of groceries.
Can anyone supply info on trunk space? Having owned a 1969 Beetle (in the dark ages) for 8 years - that size truck would be sufficient.
Awaiting any reply,
Krootie
One of the smart options is a rear divider. It's worth the money so that your groceries don't find their way into the front seat.
One of the things that I like about the compact storage space in the smart is that the bags don't end up falling over in the back & spilling out. I use the stroage space in teh rear, the front seat for fragile items like eggs, bread, pies, etc. & the floor in front of the passsenger seat for additional items. I haven't had a problem fitting in 2 weeks worth of groceries.
The divider has kangaroo pockets that are very handy, and it prevents items to roll forward and under the seats (it "velcros" to the floor material).
The cargo space is 39" wide, 27" tall, and 21" deep.
Two pictures are worth...
I regularly fit a shopping cart full of groceries in the back of mine.
When I moved, I had my 17" iMac (in original box), my second LCD monitor (in original box), my G4 based server (in original box), an HP laser printer, a box with 4 external hard drives in it at one point.
I also most recently carried an IKEA Poang Chair, footstool, cushions for both, 2 small lamps and an end table in mine from the IKEA store in Baltimore to my home outside DC... that one was a bit tight, but it was a good trip.
We found out that a trip to Costco may cause problems if you buy the jumbo pack of paper towels, a pack of toilet tissue, and a big bag of dog food at the same time! It fit, but made later stops a bit of a challenge.
Seriously, we are constantly amazed at the amount of stuff we have been able to pack in and don't hesitate to go shopping with our smarts -- we have a Passion coupe and a Cabrio and really haven't run out of space in either.
I'm building a solid shelf so we can travel with our dogs -- they will have the "mezzanine" level for themselves, and our luggage will be underneath.

What great posts! After settling down for a long winter nap last night, I had a depressing thought - can't get a SmartCar as I regularly tote my elderly Mother and her folding wheelchair. Your video from YouTube destroyed that worry. Thankfully, too! Can't believe the space in that car. More than sufficient and more than my old '69 Bug. (Must visit the Pittsburgh, PA dealer for test ride.)
And to start a file - on "must haves" such as the rear divider. Seem there is much work ahead and enjoyment in these posts.
Again, . . . thanks for the input - I was thinking I was showing signs of senility for wanting this car.
