im wanting to get a smart car and even though i havent got one yet i have been looking into it alot, i really want one and later on down the road, i would like to put a better engine in it, one that really takes off, i have seen it done to some but does anyone have any links as to what can drop in it?
not much of anything else (at least w/o ripping the car apart!)....do you know where the engine is? .....tucked tightly into the rear behind the seats.
What kind of performance am i looking at in the stock engine of the car? i like to take off fast like a motorcycle does but im not sure of a smart cars performance or not. im sure theres ways to upgrade the torque and HP, i dont want to sound like some idiot who just wants to go fast in his smart car, the car is awesome in size, shape and overall looks like a really good car to keep around, i just want to make sure i can get what i want out of it.
Thanks for the welcome!!
i have a 2001 ford mustang v6 and thats been my dream car for a long time until i saw these smart cars coming into town, theres two of them around here and i really really like them, if it comes down to it i would actually sell my stang for one, for me its all about gas mileage but i would like to get some good performance out of it as well. i know how much help these forums can be, modded mustang has been a lifesaver for me and my stang, im hoping this one will be no less.
well performance.....I like the line someone else coined here on the forum....it does 0-60 - period! The smart engine available here in the states is a 3 cylinder, 1000cc, 71 hp gas engine. It will do 0-60 in about 13.5 secs. In Europe a turbo version is available which puts out 84 hp, and knocks the time to under 11 sec. A performance version (Brabus) bumps the turbo output to 98hp, and shatters 10 secs. So that's about the maximum of what you can expect out of this little engine.
and before you ask, there are no aftermarket turbo kits available for this engine....
Well dgtracy, you say it's all about mileage. And you say you want to jump off the line like a motorcycle? The problem here is physics, more power means burning more gas ... generally speaking.
The smart's gas mileage is good, but NOT stunning. And, so far as power goes ... it holds its own in traffic. I've got a lead foot and often find myself leaving the pack behind from traffic lights. That's not because the smart is a hot rod though, it's more due to the fact that those people are using feather touch on their gas peddles trying to be fuel efficient. That's something I need to practice more myself.

People have dropped a suzuki GSXR engine in it, but so far its only for the previous version of the car. I'm sure a frame will be made so you can do it in this one eventually.
I hope to also do that in the future, but long after my smart has done its commuting job for a number of years
If you're looking to build a sleeper, buy an Audi A-4 Quattro with a 1.8L Turbo. Do a turbo, exhaust, cooler and ECU remap and you can push it to 500+HP. It will flat burn all four tires flat.
If you want a sharp fuel sipper that will get you plenty of attention without having to replace your tires, buy the smart, put on an exhaust and chill.
