I hit a deer in my then-new Mazda Protoge a few years ago. The car was less than a year old. I was traveling about 70 mph on Hwy 21 between Alto and Crocket, headed for Houston, and came over a hill and there was a 180 lb 8-point buck standing right in the middle of the road. I had a very quick "Oh S@#%" moment and had virtually no time to decide what to do. I may have been able to veer into the oncoming lane (not being able to see if a car was coming the other way), yet the deer might have bolted back and hit me anyway. I slammed on the brakes and braced myself. I hit him square on; he flew up and bounced off the right roof edge and flew clear of the car; didn't even smash the window. By the time I came to a stop, I couldn't see him in my rear view mirror. I left the engine running, as there didn't seem to be any sound of a smashed fan blade or steam coming from the radiator. It dented up the front Big Time, but there was no damage to the radiator or fan. There was a car behind me that saw the whole thing and pulled in behind me to see if I was ok. The deer apparently was several yards behind us in the grass on our side of the road, dead as doornail. I was flabbergasted when one of the occupants of the car that stopped, asked if he could have the deer! (This WAS deep East Texas afterall, I had to remind myself!) I got back in the car and drove on down to Houston, shaky and astounded how well that car held up in that situation. As it was, it ended up costing me $2500 to fix the damage to the front of my car.I still have that Mazda, even though I bought my new Smart, I didn't want to sell my Protege; it has been the best car I have ever owned, besides my little Smart!
