There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the delivery time in
the Dallas area. Another person in the Dallas area reserved 11days
before me and received his car (not an orphan) July3rd my DDE
says 11/10/08-2/08/09 that would be four months worth of deliveries
for 11 days of orders. I could see that many orders at the time of
the road show but I ordered months prior to the road show.
Also I’ve seen a couple of post saying dealers up north have delivered
300 cars when at the time if you divided the cars delivered by number
of dealers it came out to about 200 cars per dealer. Looks like some
dealers are getting short changed.

I agree with you completely. I've watched the DDE move six months, jumping in both directions since I first looked it up. And you call and they keep stating that it's "just an estimate." No, it's a random number generator. An estimate is based on actual data and information.
My guess is that the waiting list will get shorter with the financial crisis. People will cancel reservations and fewer people will make new ones. If someone just lost their job, or fears that they will, it's unlikely that they will rush out to buy a new car.
What smart should be doing is sending reminders to those who put in the $99 reservations, giving them a chance to cancel. Then instead of building some unwanted Pure with heated seats and no AC to ship to Florida where it will be refused by the person who ordered it and become an orphan, they could build your car or mine exactly the way we want it.

I reserved mine November 25, 2007. Got the email to configure in Aug 08 but finally got to do it September 18 2008. Right now the DDE says December 2008 to February 2009. About 2 weeks ago it said Feb-April of 09. So it seems to be moving along...but not fast enough.

Can you post when you are asked to configure? Thanks.

Goldstar, I got the invitation to configure today. Hopefully your email will be coming soon too. For me it was 3 months from reservation to configuring date.

I just got my invitation to configure today. I reserved in May.
I now have, on order, a 2009 cabriolet in red with black tridion frame. It will have the comfort package (leather heated seats, automatic wipers, automatic headlights, electric power steering), fog lamps, alarm, and pod tach and clock.
It will be replacing my 2008 orphan cabrio ("tomato red" with black tridion) which lacks the fog lamps, alarm, automatic wipers and lights, and leather seats. I'm planning to sell that one when the new one comes in and, hopefully, not take too big a bath on it. I'll put the stock radio 10 back in but leave the Polk speakers in the door and the USB connector in the glove compartment.

Thanks Danag for the update. The wait time sure seems to be decreasing as it's been only 3 months since you made your reservation. Having read the other postings, I thought it would be at least 6 months. Likely, I can expect to configure in about 2 months. Now, I DON'T KNOW if I should take an 'orphan' when the dealer calls me up or wait my my own 'child'. I will post when I get my turn so other South Bay-ers can have a better idea what to expect. Did it give you an updated DDE after the configuration?
Better luck to those future Smart owners who think that are lost in the time tunnel.
