What Extras - Luxury Items that you CAN'T live without?
For all the current owners of - what extras would you order again?
Before I visit the dealer to formalize the order, I'm somewhat confused by the package deals and extras mentioned in these posts. Do see two package deals for 2009s - "Comfort" and "Premium Sound".
Are there other extras provided by the factory - or add-ons by the dealership?
(At this point - not interested in the modifications. Maybe later? )
Gee I thought this was going to be a bigger question on what we can live without in this economy.
OK about the smart.
-I can turn on my wipers when it rains. so no need for autowipers (also adds cost to widshild replacement)
-THe car does heat up quickly even on realy cold days so heated seats are only good for the first 5 min, I can live without them.
-For safety I like power windows so I don't need to crank windows while driving in and out of tolls (but I-pass has helped limit this need)
-you can always upgrade the radio
-Tach and clock, their is another clock in the main cluster(just not that big) and the car has an idiot nanny arrow telling you when to shift when your im manual mode (we have found a 5 mpg jump when we started using auto mode instead of manual)
-Don't have power steering, don't need it
-Depending on where you take the car will determine if you need the factory alarm. The motions sensors make this worth doing it up front rather than an aftermarket add on.
Anything the dealers were adding to the orphans to jack up the price are not worth it (Glass etching, clear bra, lojack, nav system etc.)
Premium Sound: If you don't want to mess with aftermarket radios and installations, the upgraded audio system is worth the money for the extra/improved speakers and 6-disc changer. I have it and would buy it again.
Clock/Tach Pods: Yes, the clock is redundant, but I like the tach and the whole look. I think they add some 'character' to the interior that sets the smart apart. I have them and would order again.
Fog Lights: I like fog lights in the area where I drive. I think it's great that the hi-beams and fog lights work together for conditions that warrant it (ie. not in dense fog). I have them and would order again.
EPS: Electric power steering isn't needed, but the difference is at least noticeable at low speeds. However, I wouldn't spend $450 for this option unless you just really need it for some reason. It's also one more thing to berak/need maintenance.
Alarm system: I did not buy this option, but probably would the next time after hearing about people tipping smart cars.
Comfort package: 1) My wife hates leather and I wanted a brighter interior; 2) I can operate the wipers/headlights myself, 3) didn't need/want the power steering, 4) car is garaged so heated seats are a moot point and something else to break. So, I wasnt interested in this option and would make the same choice if I had to again.
I got an orphan and it had more options than I would have ordered. Got the Cabrio, so many things are standard. Here is my list:
Power Steering - Got it, but it costs to much for benefit.
Heated Seats - Would not have ordered it, but glad they are there. Not for the heat, but just great on your back.
Fog lights - Fancy extra, mine has it.
Tach and Clock - These are cheap and look good. Get them.
Etched Security - About $100, will get you discount on insurance.
Security - Get it. Much better than aftermarket.
Daytime running lights - Get them. May prevent big wreck. Lets you get seen.
I found most options really pretty cheap that come from factory. Dealer options seem fairly expensive.

Heated seats: See item #4 above.
It's like you read my mind...
I can live without extras, a pure is almost as acceptable as a Passion.
I have every option listed above and love them all, I called my wife 10 mins after I drove from the smart dealership and told her that we spent a little more than we wanted but I don't have to do a thing to my car, I love it just the way it sits..
fog lights make a big difference!!! the 2 smarts i have rode in, one has fog lights and it helps soo much especially to see those creatures that pop out of nowhere in the night...and the other has no fog lights but will be installing soon...
I love heated seats in the Portland, OR climate - takes the edge off any chill quickly.
The hockey-puck sensor is going away, isn't it? Comfort package now includes fog lights instead of auto lights and auto wipers, doesn't it?
I went for the comfort package because of the (mostly) leather seats and seat heaters. Getting the EPS with the package was a bonus; I probably wouldn't have paid for that as a stand-alone option. Now that the fog lights are included, I'd suggest this package unless you prefer fabric seats or can't stand a warm bottom on a cold wintery West Virginia day.
Don't bother with the factory upgraded sound. Contact your dealer to find the cost of replacing the speakers with something decent and, perhaps, the radio as well. The cost from your dealer for a truly decent system is probably much less than what the factory "calls" premium. And there's always Car Toys.
The factory alarm is probably a good deal at the asking price. I don't want to ever find my car messed with by idiot teens because they thought it would be fun to screw around with a tiny car. I'd only consider LoJack if crime's a problem in your travels and if your local police support LoJack.
I took every option available, including the cabrio roof. I don't regret any of them, and I'll do it again, and hope for several new options not offered in 2008.
What could I live without? A car!
But, it sure would take longer to get to places. And, said car wouldn't be as much fun without all the toys.
