What now?

I pluncked down my dough and put in my reservation last weekend. Got a couple of auto emails from the Smart folks sayin' basically ** "talk to you soon."

What next? How soon will I get some kind of number that tells me where I am in line? I thought it would be first come first serve. A few threads here are making me think it matters where you live (and maybe who you know?).

All in all, I'm in the dark. It is a complete cr*p shoot from here? Or is there some predictabilty to this?

Welcome to the waiting game!! smart center Portland will eventuallly be your assigned dealership, I recommend you contact them and get to know the sales and management staff. Visit them and take a test drive. You should have about a 12-18 month wait for you car. Everyone who registered last year has configured (save a few poor souls who have not), that is the got an e-mail from smartUSA inviting them to finalize their order. Specific model, color, interior, options, etc. After that you wait patiently, or not; until the car is produced in France and shipped to the US. There is some order to the chaos, but very little support from PDX with respect to shipping information. If you want a car fast, get on their Orphan list. People who have registered and configured sometimes cannot take delivery because, 18 months is a looooong time and things change. Their car becomes and Orphan. If you are not too particular on model, color or options this is an direction to go. Got my Passion in 18 days that way from PDX. Good Luck and Welcome!!!

So can I get on the orphan's list now? Or does that have to wait until I have been contacted by smart to configure the car?

Thanks for the info, Dunerunner!

Yes, you can get on the Orphan list NOW (recommended)! Call Massimo at scP and ask to be added. You have a reservation so getting on the list requires only your request. Tell them everything you will consider in an Orphan but remember if you become very specific it will take longer to get a car. PDX (scP) tries to match those on the Orphan list with the closest match to the car they are interested in so you may not have to wait too long. Good Hunting !!

Hello! How do the smart centers feel about a (semi-desperate)person requesting to being put on more than one orphan list. Is this totally frowned upon? Thanks!

Some absolutely will not add you if you wil not be assigne to their dealership, other don't seem to care too much where you're from if you are serious about spending money with them. The trick is to find them. I would call around, there are plenty of smart centers around MD. Good Hunting!
