Where Is It?

I've been waiting five months for my smart car. 100 years ago Henry Ford produced a car every 6 hours. Do they really want these things to sell? This is the worst marketing approach I've ever seen.

I really do not think that Penske and M-B had any idea that the cars would go over so well. Think back 3-4 years when the plans were being made. SUV and trucks ruled the sales charts....gas was cheap by today's price and a little 2 seat car may have been looked at as a flop. Now it's in high demand and it will take a while to catch up with out flooding the dealers. I see more being avail in a year...with a price increase too. (supply and demand) Us 2008 Smart owners will then look 'Smart'! (sorry)

Yes, the wait is long...many here have waited a full year to take delivery. Its just a simple fact when demand greatly exceeds supply on a new car launch. Happened with the PT Cruiser, then the MINI. It won't be this way a couple years from now, but for now we just have to wait - or find an orphan!

Got my Orphan in 18 days with more options than I would have configured and I love it! If you have the desire to get a car NOW, get on the dealers Orphan list but be prepared to spend more for options and dealer installed (add ons) like lo-jack, clearbra, tire and wheel packages and paint protection.

Lyons - However, if you had heard that Henry Ford was beginning to manufacture vehicles in 1900, and you put an order in for a Model A, how long would you have had to wait? Yep, three years! From the time Henry brgan producing his commercial trucks in 1900, three years went by before the Model A came out for sale. So, does 5 months really sound that bad? Most of us have waited more than a year for the smart fortwo to come to America. Not only has smart had to put together a new company, manufacturing plant, sales, marketing, dealerships, designs, etc., our smart fortwos have to compete for finite resources with smart cars destined for Canada, England and Europe.

The fact that they have already sold nearly a million cars kind of makes your question a head-scratcher. As far as marketing goes...you're waiting for one - I guess that means it works.

It was exactly a year ago, on May 7th that I reserved my car - so, you might have a little more waiting ahead of you. I'm thinking it was a very smart, (pun intended) decision at the time, and I feel smarter about it every day.

Put your big girl panties on and wait like the rest of us - or just bite the bullet, and go buy an orphan.

Just be thankful you don't live the DFW metroplex or area's around it served by the dallas smart center. The one I reserved in May of 07 and configured in March of 08 is estimated to be delivered Dec 08 - Feb 09. That is almost a 2 years wait. Fortunately I got an orphan and it was still almost a year for that.
