Whining noise when starts up?

I've had my smart for a couple weeks. Three or four times I've head a whining noise when the car starts. Only lasts a couple minutes, but it frightens me. Is something wrong?

Nope. Some sort of blower motor for air into the exhaust. Both mine do the same thing.

...thanks Peteinlongbeach for the following cutNpaste...

It's an air pump for exhaust emissions. It pumps air into the exhaust manifold to help complete the combustion of the richer fuel mixture when the motor is cold, and to help the catalytic converter heat up faster for better emission control.

thanks Pete..

There was some debate on this recently so I looked it up. It's listed in the technical spec manual you can download from this site and works exactly as described in the quote. Smart refers to it as "Secondary Air Injection."
