Woohoo!!

I'm way down on the list for my Passion, so I'll admit I've been trying to get a car by paying someone ahead of me on the list. Yes I know this was bad and they supposedly don't allow it, but I had 2 different dealers tell me they would do it. The problem was, both people backed out of the deal at the last minute. After two disasters I gave up on that route and decided to go to the dealer in San Francisco and see about getting on the orphan list. When he asked me what I wanted I said a loaded Passion in any color and he said too bad all we have are cabriolets. I was astonished that they actually had some cars for sale and I checked them out. Both were customized by the dealer so they could jack up the price. The first one was a really cool orange custom paint with a black tridion. I thought it would be great to own one in a unique color, but the Dodger fan in me just couldn't be reconciled to an orange and black car The second one was a White Cabrio with silver tridion and custom black and tan leather interior, xenon lights and chrome package including chrome wheels. They also added bluetooth capability and back up sensors. I bought it for $23500. Before I could even get to the finance guy the orange one sold. I still can't believe I got lucky enough to walk into the dealer and drive out an hour later with a new smart. I'm having a blast, but from a guy's perspective it's hard to keep hearing how cute your car is.

The only person who got lucky here to me is the dealership. You payed, what, over $6,000 list for a Smart car? $23,000 for this thing? That's over a third the MSRP of that car. Incredible.

i'm sure he paid 'something' over and above MSRP, but you still have to factor in the chrome kit, inc WHEELS, custom tu-tone leather interior, etc. THAT stuff isn't cheap. yea, the dealer made $$ on that as well, but $6K OVER List.....probably not.

would "I" do it? no, but "rwjrn"s happy and that's what counts!

rwjrn............ what was needed to order your vanity plate? time frame? Any information is appreciated. I've got about 1-2 months wait yet for my car; seems like it might be a good time to order one.
Thanks

I just went to the California DMV website. It cost $41 to order the plate with a 6-8wk waiting period. They'll notify me when they come in, then I have to do paperwork as to what car I'm putting them on.

Yes I paid over MSRP for the car, but the options the dealer added cost 6480. It's not like I gave him that extra money for nothing. And the black and tan leather interior is not only gorgeous, but one of a kind. The chrome wheels were the big ticket item. I'm in my car a year ahead of schedule and rather settling for something less I got something even cooler than I planned. I'm happy as a clam.
