I'm gonna be doing a 2500, and a 5000 drain/fill of oil only. Pay the dealer every 10 for their service and refresh the oil myself every five.

My decision to let them do the filter may change depending on how much they charge me...We'll see...

Yea my first thought was my next smart will have to include a 2000 mile oil change.. My dealer gave me 3 free services. Instead of the other freebees like winter mats.

I'd rather they did the oil change for me they would prob do more than the jiffy lube. And be able to see if anything is off. Also not strip nuts and bolts..

I may be a stickler for maintenance, but to me changing the oil and not the filter is like putting back on the same socks after a shower.....

Still, these aren't scheduled for change but every 10K. They can hold a LOT of crap...and since we run synthetic, there should be very little of break-in material. Microscopic bits that might get by the filter when new. They'd be in the pan, hopefully staying at the bottom (unless drained). Anything getting picked up by the oil pump goes right into the filter. Maybe this time it'll get caught in the media. The longer a filter is used the better it works, until it gets clogged and restricts flow.

I don't think you are doing your car any favors by changing the oil a lot more frequently than is suggested. I'd suggest that you do an oil analysis (about $13) and you will most likely see that your synthetic oil is good for that 10K suggested interval. I was a skeptic myself when I got my first Mercedes that called for oil changes every 10K miles, but after a few oil analyses, I became a believer.

Inquiring minds want to know - did you ever make that "range anxiety" filled round-trip to the smart Center for your first annual battery check?

Nope, not yet - that's a couple of months away. I did a test run last week in my SLK to check the route, mileage, etc. and to visit some old stomping grounds. I've got to get 68 miles on my longest leg. Had the EV out today and at a 50% charge, I've gone 46 miles and it shows 40 miles left, so I feel better about doing that trip in the summer weather.

Changing more frequently than recommended is not the best thing for the environment either-all that used oil has to be disposed of.

Good point!

At the rate some suggested here, your smart will be using more oil than a 2-stroke!
