453 oil type?

OK so I'm a dummy and my constant site searching is turning up 0 results.

Please answer: Does the 453 use 0w40 engine oil like the earlier models?

Thanks
-Steve

Pretty confusing...

From the manual:
Quote:
All models 229.51, 229.53
From the Mercedes Bevo site:

229.51 Low SPAsh multigrade service engine oils (Specification 229.51)
229.53 isn't listed....?

Mobil 1 Euro formula 0W 40 is on that list.

smart USA always recommends consulting your smart center - not sure why they just don't give the recommended oil(s) specs to the owners up front.

Agreed. I wish they would simply spell it out for us simple minded folk.

I saw the "Bevo" info, however, since it didn't make any sense to me, I thought it better to ask here. You guys are the best resource and FAR more helpful than trying to beg for info like this from my local service center...

Thanks for the clarification.

Here's a link to a sheet that nearly covers every Mercedes vehicle:

http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_223_2.pdf

Just a quick glance a the dots, note that 229.51 is more for diesel vehicles with diesel particulate filter.

Under "Gasoline Engines - Worldwide (except Western Europe) -"

please note that 229.5 seems to be the specs to follow...

Very confused???

I read the 2016 manual available on www.smartusa.com and found the 229.51 and 229.53, but but but???

Mercedes is definitely not being consistent!

Look at this!!!

https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-esp

For diesel. Something definitely isn't right....

Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 is on the 229.51 list
Mobil 1 0W-40 is on the 229.5 list...

Since people popping into these forums might search and find this thread, I thought I'd update that the motor is M 281, and the oil specs 226.5 and 229.5 are to be followed globally, and if your smart happens to be refueling in Western Europe 229.3 can be used. BEVO sheet is dated 01/2016, while the owner's manual is dated "As at 10.04.2015" on page 2, the "Publication details" page....

I believe it is the insert, going by your location.

US 453s have the 898cc turbo engine - should be in the specs section of the owners manual....

It's not.

I went through every page of the manual. It tells you to use "Mercedes recommended oil" and does not list the type of oil to use.

I was referring to Paul Va's question about the oil filter, not the oil.
