Any newer golfers on here?

So this is going to come off as somewhat of a stupid post I suppose - but I'm kind of curious as to if anyone has any advice.

I've been interested in golf for a few years, but have never played. I think it is something I would like to get into - but am sort of lost as to where to start. Has anyone on here taken it up recently, and how did you get started?

I've paroused Craigslist and such for clubs - but in all of my reading - I don't think that is a good route to go - I want to make sure I start off with the right equipment, lest I learn bad form from the start.

Go to a reputable PGA Professional and take a lesson. In fact, go to several. Like anyone else, every Pro has a different approach. Find the one you like that teaches with respect to your physical abilities and take a series of lessons there.

You may spend $1000 on lessons but when you take into consideration you will be spending $30 - $120 per round of golf and up to $1400 for a set of fitted clubs, not to mention, shoes, wind shirts, jackets, balls, that special putter or putters you have to have, it is worth the investment not to start with any bad habits.

That's what I have heard... I've been doing a little digging for places with lessons and such. With fall coming - I am sort of getting out of the season, but I want to make sure to take spring head-on with this.

Depending on where you live, there may be group classes for beginners that will run you less than private and would be a good place to start. I actually signed up thru a community college non-credit course. It was 8 lessons with a group but it was cheap $125 (more than a few years back...), started out with the basics of grip, stance, and swing. You can get low cost clubs at Academy Sports to start with. I wouldn't spend a bunch on equipment until you know it is the equipment that is holding you back and not your game.
The most important thing is to enjoy being out there and stay in a good mood. You will get frustrated with it many times so it is easy to give up.
Good luck,

Pops and Carlito
