No income tax, no complicated tax code, no loop holes, no IRS workers on the dool, no tax preperation money to spend blah, blah, blah

That is actually a very good idea. Our current tax system is a complete joke.

Yeah, not really, just depends on who is posting. This thread is so telling.

Just my .02 here, but there's politics (xxxx is an xxxxx because he's a member of the xxxx party and everyone on knows they feast on dead babies) - that post would get pulled IMHO; and then there are discussions about politics (xxxx is a better system than xxx because...., or is the electoral college system still workable, for example) - don't think either of those would be moderated unless posters began to get specific with party affiliations, name calling, bashing, etc.
There's a fine line here between over and under moderating, and with the number of active members on the forums whatever happens is bound to make someone unhappy. I will say that a lot of discussion goes on before a thread gets pulled (or "cleaned up") and the goal is to keep the SCOA forums a place where civility and respect carry more weight than boorish behavior.

This thread is still political, no matter how you categorize politics. And though I don't find this thread at all offensive, it does make me uncomfortable that it's not been shut down. Not because of the details of the content, but just because it is purely political and therefor against forum policies.
Why not make it easy on yourself and be consistent with the moderation?

See what I mean about someone always being unhappy; not a slam to you, just an honest difference of viewpoint.

I'm not unhappy and I don't feel slammed (really, was that a slam? - you're lousy at slamming!)
All I'm saying is consistency makes it easy on you. You don't have to contemplate what to do for each thread and post, just follow the policy.

Thank you - I take pride in being lousy at slamming.
Consistency is in the eye of the beholder; I feel (and I think the other mods do as well) we are being consistent. Others will disagree. Keep those cards and letters coming and we'll deal with the issues as needed, realizing the outcome may not be satisfactory to all.

It's an interesting suggestion, but I see a few problems:
- When sales taxes increase, purchases of non-essential items drop and lower costs items are often bought. Everyone from waitresses to stereo salesmen would see their incomes drop. It's the opposite of an "economic stimulus".
- It hits the poor much harder. If a war widow is just scraping by to feed herself and her kids, adding a tax to the food, clothing, heating oil, school supplies, books, etc., it really hurts.
- Those living hand to mouth will find every cent that they earn taxed while those who make so much that they could never spend it all (e.g. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, George Soros) spend only a tiny fraction of what they earn.
I think that the first step should be eliminating corporate taxes. We're essentially paying corporations to do stupid things which make them less competitive in a world market. There are countless warehouses filled with worthless junk that companies are storing because they are depreciating the stored items for the tax benefit. If a computer is no longer useful, it should be disposed of -- not stored in a rented warehouse for several years. American companies are spending billions of dollars on tax lawyers, CPAs, and associated clerical workers in order to game the tax code and minimize their tax burden.
