Cell phones in Europe advice

We go to Europe every year or so and it's handy to have a cell (mobile) phone when we travel. Unfortunately we're with Verizon now and their phones don't work in Europe. Thought I'd solicit advice since a lot of forum members are tech savvy and seem to travel a lot. What's your best idea for having a cell phone in Europe - take a compatible phone from a US company and roam, take the same phone and switch SIM cards, rent a phone in Europe, buy a prepaid phone in Europe, etc? Thanks in advance for your input.

My son was a student in England. We have used MOBAL with great success. The other folks try to sell you excess insurance. SEE http://www.mobalrental.com/ It works.

John... We have done about every variant possible when I take a test team over... the most usable and least expensive is T-Mobil prepaid phones. IMO... about a dozen places to get them right at the airport. I have access to most military bases... usually where they are sold on base is NOT inside the PX but out in the food court vendor areas...ALL citizens are allowed to buy anything in those areas with out a set of stamped orders or a Military CAC card...wink

Thanks Fred - hadn't considered buying on base/post, but we're usually nowhere near them anyway. Worth a thought, though.

The cost savings in not enough to deliberately get them on base... but if in the area any way worth a few bucks to check out... I assume you are over under 30 days... the semi inflated airport pre paid phones have more then enough minutes to accommodate modest usage...but certainly can get expensive for folks WHO can not seem to have a conversation less then a few min... IFKWIM..grin
