Sorry! So much good reading material I'll miss, for sure.
My bad, I suppose...

Oops! Well, I'm done with crazy long posts anyways.

Too long :(

There are some insipid types of hatred that try to mask themselves as love. There are proponents of saving the earth at the expense of someone's life or livelihood (maiming a logger comes to mind); depriving someone of their freedoms for the common (but fallacious) good (this could be economic like banning certain toilets or the laws to ban common incandescent bulbs); sometimes it just envy of the power of big organizations (not that we shouldn't be wary of those with a lot of power); as well as those from other ends of the philosophical spectrum (such as those that have attacked certain types of doctors).

From reading this interesting thread it is obvious that most if not all people posting here are reasonable and decent people although there is a certain amount of disagreement, lack of background knowledge and odd reaching of certain conclusions (hopefully something that time will teach each of us).

From my experiences as a kid growing up in the early hey days of environmental fever I now regret the needless fears that were thrust upon public school students which were perhaps more harmful than the dread causes we were taught. We knew that we would all be dead by the year 2000 because 'scientists' proved that pollution and over population were not survivable. (thanks Rachel Carson et al)

Here we are well past 2000 and the doom and gloom continue to thrive although morphed. I do not accept that my children will be swayed by similar fears especially as decent science says the opposite.

As an example:
The population is going to reach a peak (perhaps around 2050) as our average age increases and birth rates are dropping off (globally). In this regard Japan is is serious trouble with Europe following not far behind. I am sure this is troubling to those who resist change (and others) but humanity will adapt because we are very good at it.

On a more anecdotal level, I have noticed the air in Los Angeles to be far cleaner than it was in the 1970's as the result of some good smog laws, as well as Lake Erie going from a shallow dump to a relatively clean body of water. It's OK to want to keep our backyards clean. Local activism can be pretty effective.

Fears are fanned by people with an agenda, to gain power, to sell you something or to get you to act a certain way (perhaps because they sincerely believe in their position). What I hear a lot of people saying here is that they do not accept coercionand that there is actually some common ground if we don't insist upon ignoring it.

BTW I did not buy my smart car to be green, but it is not a bad by-product. I am consuming about 60% less gasoline now and that makes me smart (but I am not a subscriber to the oil independence line of thinking, we choose to buy crude from those who used to sell if cheap and now we will find a balance between alternative sources and our own vast hardly tapped resources).

quote Psyco Claw..."Now correct me if I'm wrong, but when you go to the grocery, there are regular light bulbs next to the florescent ones aren't there"

sez Fred: yes....for now... but soon the incandescent Will Be a black market item....

Did you miss where your government created a LAW making Incandescent bulbs obsolete and in phasing in Florescent ONLY bulbs for us in the USA...

......brought to you by the same idiots who Legislated how much water you need to flush you poo n pee down....

I am conservative..duh... so by definition a republican (in the eye of some... NOT me)..

Our Stupid Republican pandering Presidential Politician signed this into Law. I support a lot of Bush"s policies as relates to war and foreign policy...but his domestic pandering is INSANE...and dangerous

If you think florescent bulbs are good for you, and save money, or energy, you are either poorly educated or poorly informed...do some damned research.... all that is necessary is a 8th grade reading comprehension.... Yes Virginia, they write the facts to the 8th grade level of reading and comprehension... ( hint think Mercury, and Lumens per watt)... and please do not forget to acknowledge that Florescent requires heat and TIME to ever yield full rated Candle power (lumens)

JPaul I am saddened...I read every word of yours, I respectfully expect the same coutesy...

I am aware that I do not have all the facts or answers... opinions a plenty as you can see...

These are IMPORTANT issues and we all need to opine, present facts, discuss, and vote a rational vote...

But alas.. this particular political season.. waste of time, all three are the most horrific panderers in the history of this young country... saddens me immensely

Unfortunately the hate and vitriol has not even really begun...

I know florescent bulbs aren't the best thing out there. The mercury they contain quite frankly frightens me. I just put that in there as it seemed a good contrast to regular incandescent bulbs. I'm reading this post by my good ol' incandescent light. And yes, I did miss that law requiring the phasing out of incandescents. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
And I do agree with you that some laws that are passed are just silly.
As they say, you can't please them all.

I believe you are right... uhhh... correct XCREW.

Here is a pretty good place to debate the election: The Economist.

Since it is not US based they have an interesting and perhaps unbiased although economics based viewpoint. This particular article has quite a few comments representing a very wide spectrum. Good place to go to jump into the fray;)
