Today, USAA is stronger than at any time in our 86-year history, and I am very pleased to announce that USAA is opening membership to include the following:
* Military retirees who served honorably, regardless of when they retired
* Military personnel honorably discharged on or after January 1, 1996
* Widows and widowers of military members killed in action while eligible
After they join, spouses and children of the above may also be eligible to enjoy the benefits of membership.
So, if you are retired military (no matter when you retired) you are eligible to join USAA. I've been with them for over 40 years and they treat you right.
I just got off the phone with USAA as the online service wouldn't work. Seems they are putting Florida under suspension for no new policies until AFTER this storm passes. The storm isn't going to even come near my section of Florida and I wasn't going to have the policy start until next Monday.
Orphan Beggar - If your dad lives in Florida (like many retirees do), he needs to wait until after Wednesday to call.

USAA is a fantastic company. Been with them for 20 years and never had an issue that couldn't be resolved with just one phone call.
I have been a satisfied member of USAA since 1959; some 49 years ago, when I was first commissioned. My ex-wife and my adult children are also members.
However, I have a neighbor here in Chapala who is even older than I am and he isn't eligible, even though he was also an officer. In fact, he was a B-17 pilot in WWII and still energetic and sharp as a tack in his late eighties. He, and many others, fall through the cracks and can't use USAA. I find that a bit unfair.
RVGRINGO - the point with the new rules changes are that he may now be eligible. Please encourage him to check again; these rule changes are very recent.

sounds like my grandfather, he was eligible to be buried in arlington cemetary, but not to be a USAA member... go figure!
