Looks like the 'standard answer' from an engineer is
'the energy is converted into heat'. I agree with your 'standard answers' and can even offer absolute proof.
The scenario is this: I eat a meal of a dozen White Castle cheeseburgers with a side order of Jalapeno Poppers and down a couple beers. After that, the churning begins in my stomach which is a chemical reaction between my stomach acids and the food, which then creates energy. Once it goes unused,
'the energy is converted into heat' and the result is........
