With skyrocketing tax rates on cigarettes many people are kicking the habit. Tax rates are already slated to increase further. Non smokers may not realize it, but premium brands now sell for $6 and UP per pack, depending on your location. The goal is twofold ... raise revenues and motivate people to quit smoking.
The first thing that will result is the development of a black market in tobacco products. This has already begun. Then, when a substantial enough percentage of people have kicked the habit, the government's cash cow will go dry. What will they then tax the hell out of? Alcohol, certainly ... that's already begun. It is so easy to justify sin taxes.
Marijuanna is another potential source of revenue for the government. They should legalize the evil weed, regulate it as they do alcohol and tobacco, and tax it. They'd make billions nationwide and maybe take some pressure off the other vices (tongue firmly in cheek). Legal pot would also offer a lucrative crop option to farmers. How does it make sense for alcohol to be legal, while pot isn't. Alcohol is much more dangerous a DRUG, so is tobacco. (BTW, I haven't smoked pot in years. But, I did inhale.)

Does this mean you are thinking of quitting smoking?
My question of the day....
Look at the new Air Force commercials. Look closely at the guys flying the REMOTE CONTROL planes. Now, my question is Why are they wearing fire resistant flight suits when they never even leave the ground or even step foot in a REAL plane?

They will start taxing drivers by the mile rather than the gallon.
That way all those people who have done the right thing, reduced their carbon foot print and conserved fuel will still pay the same amount of tax as the earth destroyers.
And yes, most states have a plan for this in the works.

What Big Brother technology will they use to determine your mileage? I recall this topic from a while back. Truthfully, I didn't pay much attention because I thought it was incredible. One can hope it would take a generation to implement.
Odometer readings at annual tag renewal; mileage estimates based on work address, demographic data, satellite imaging of your garage door opening and closing...
