Hmm...I'm going to try and reply to all of these in one go. Sorry, I'm too lazy to quote..
I agree, John, 'No Country for Old Men' was fantastic. It was extremely suspenseful, especially on the big screen. Even watching the scene with Chigur messing with that old man at the gas station, in the comfort of my own home, had me on pins and needles. Have you seen 'There Will be Blood'? That was also supposed to be very good, although I missed it when it was out.
Note to self, don't watch 'Bucket List' after something extremely sad has happened. I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Kevin. If the movie was funny to you, even as you both were teared up, it must have been
really funny! Mayhaps I'll look into that one.
Smartah, I agree, Robert Downy Jr did an excellent job! And I actually didn't mind the Pepper Pots character-usually I don't like the female leads in comic book adaptations (Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, anyone?)
Don't worry, Doc and Dan-having a mother who's secret ambition is to be a film historian, I watch my fair share of TCM. It's nice to watch some films that aren't exploding off the screen with special effects and well...explosions.
Jeez, Mmmeat! Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd planned on avoiding 'Speed Racer' like the plague. Your description of 'worse than terrible' confirms my aforementioned plan. And, hold your breath here mmmeat, we actually agree on something! ;) That whole paragraph about CGI, acting, and story was dead on. Some other fun movies where special effects don't get in the way of the good stuff: Jurassic Park, ET, Batman Begins, and the ORIGINAL Star Wars trilogy. The newer Star Wars trilogy makes me grind my teeth.
I'm also looking forward to You Don't Mess with the Zohan (were those your
feet?!), WallE, The Dark Knight, Hellboy 2 and Indy. Other than those, I haven't even payed attention to the summer lineup. Trying to save up for my smart is hindering this whole 'going to the movies' thing.
I've never heard of 'The Bank Job', but it sounds interesting, Dave. Another one I might check out.
Whew. There we go.
I just watched 'The Empire Strikes Back' a few nights ago. It remains one of my top movies ever. You just can't beat Darth Vader choking underlings to death every five minutes. And that chase through the asteroids gets me excited every time-its like I become five again.
Another one I re-re-re-watched recently: Young Frankenstein. Can anyone watch the first scene with 'Eye'gore and 'Fro'derick and not laugh out loud? Marty Feldman was a genius.
