smart differences?

Hey guys, I have now been on this site for over a month now, it is a great site, with really great people and helpful advice, and I hope I have contributed to that, even though I am across the pond.
The reason for this post is though, I have observed a vast difference between this site and www.smartmaniacs.co.uk which is the British equivalent of this site.
The British site is more risky than this, with everybody taking the micky out of each other on a daily basis, we post photo's of each other at meets and have caption competitions with really cruel replies, we take the micky out of each others cars, call each other horrible names, tell newbies to sod off they are not wanted here, and rib each other about upcoming events, and if anybody posts photos of modifications they have done, they are ripped to pieces and told they are rubbish.
It is not for the fainthearted, I found it a bit off putting to start with until I went to a few meets, and after you know everybody, I have found I am now as bad as everybody else.
I have noticed the moderators or admins on here are very quick to stop anything that they feel may give offence, even if it was not really meant to be.
Just wondered if it is a cultural thing or are us Brits just a little bit twisted?
Comments please, as I am fascinated by the differences between America and Britain, two nations divided by a common language.
Thanks, Ellis

I'm not sure how things are over the pound for I have never been, but over here the politically correct thing to be is PC (politically correct) at all times because god forbid you say anything to any one that may upset or offend anyone.

In other words: We have freedom of speech, however, if you us it you run the risk of offending someone and get sued for slander.

That's my view.

As for the admin on the site, I believe they're just trying to be the best referees they can to keep people from arguing on here and keeping us smart posters here on the site and happy. And I think they are doing a good job at it.

Hey Yuck moon, if it is being censored then it is not freedom of speech, we have a certain amount of censorship, with swear filters and if it gets really bad it is modded, so I agree you can't get away from it, and it is only right to stop computer bullying.
Please don't get defensive, as I am only inviting comments, not getting at anybody, as I am the first one to pick faults with myself, I just find this an interesting topic

ah, the British and their sense of humour - god love 'em. Sadly, we Americans have no humor. And what a shame that is.

i would really like for someone to sue me for slander because they were offended by something i said.
i cannot control what offends someone, only they can. it's their problem.
that being said - i aim to be polite and civil without falling into the PC/BS trap.

That's better, that's what I am talking about.
Remember the old American sitcom Married with children, with the Bundies,
well the wife was from Wanker County, which caused a bit of a hoohaa over here when it was aired.
FYI a Wanker is a man who masturbates himself.
Ellis
ps. this is not the first time I have been called that, I can neither confirm or deny whether it is true
