Snakes Envirogrog

This thread is for any smarts who are home brewers. A while back Mr. Snake Farm coined a term that was just too interesting not to be used for an actual beer so here is the recipe for Snake Farm Envirogrog Brown Ale, currently being served on tap in my garage tap house.

SnakeFarm Envirogrog Brown Ale
Extract:
7 Pounds Alexander Pale LME = 36 pts/lb/gal = 252 pts

Specialty Grains:
0.5 Pounds Crystal Malt 120oL = 16 ppg = 8 ppg
1.0 Pounds Honey Malt = 18 ppg = 18 ppg
0.5 Pounds Chocolate Malt = 15 ppg = 7.5 ppg
0.5 Pounds Crystal Malt 55oL = 18 ppg = 9ppg

Total = 294.5 ppg
OG = 295/6/1000 +1.000
OG = 1.050 Calculated

Hops:
2 Ounces Centennial 8.0
1 Ounce Crystal 5.0
Yeast:
DCL Yeast US-56 SafAle US-56
Procedure:
Bring 5 gallons of filtered water to 155 – 160 degrees F with the specialty grain bag inserted. Hold for a total immersion time of 30 minutes. Remove grains and sparge in two gallons of filtered water heated to 177oF. Add Malt extract to the brew pot. Pour sparge water into brew pot and raise to a boil. At the first roll of the boil, add 2 ounces Centennial Hops. Continue the boil for 45 minutes and add Irish Moss. Boil an additional 10 minutes and add the ounce of Crystal hops. Boil 5 minutes and let stand with heat removed another 5 minutes. Cold break with wart chiller to a temperature below 85 degrees and rack into fermentation vessel. Pitch yeast over the top of the wort and move fermentor to a space regulated from 68 – 70deg F to ferment 3 – 7 days. Move fermentor to cooling area ~ 50 degrees for another 10 – 14 days for clarification and settling. Rack into keg and force carbonate to 2.25 volumes.
PLEASE !! Do Not Drink and Drive

Here is the last one I brewed....

Bull's Fat Tire Amber Ale
(5 gallons, extract with grains)

Ingredients:

o 5 lbs.
Extra-light DME
o 0.50 lb. Crystal malt (20° Lovibond)
o 0.50 lb. Crystal malt (40° Lovibond)
o 0.50 lb. Carapils malt
o 0.50 lb. Munich malt
o 0.50 lb. Biscuit malt
o 0.50 lb. Chocolate malt
o 3 AAUs Willamette pellet hops (0.66 oz. at 4.5% alpha acid)
o 1.33 AAUs Fuggle pellet hops (0.33 oz. at 4% alpha acid)
o 2 AAUs Fuggle pellet hops (0.50 oz. at 4% alpha acid)
o 1 tsp. Irish moss
o 2/3 to 3/4 cup corn sugar to prime
o White Labs WLP001

Step by step:

Steep specialty grains in 3 gallons of water at 154° F for 45 minutes. Remove grains and add dried malt extract. Bring to boil and add 0.66 oz. Willamette pellet hops. Boil for 60 minutes and add Irish moss. Boil 10 minutes and then add 0.50 oz. Fuggle hops. Boil another 20 minutes, add remaining Fuggles and remove from heat. Cool to about 70° F and transfer to primary fermenter with yeast. Ferment at 64° to 68° F until complete (7 to 10 days), then transfer to a secondary vessel, or rack into bottles or keg with corn sugar. Lay the beer down for at least a few months to mellow and mature for best results.

OG = 1.060
FG = 1.013
IBUs = 16.5
ABV = 6.13%

It is....well was, very tasty. Quite hoppy but not very bitter for my palate.

Don't think I haven't thought about it but the volume of alcohol needed requires destilling and the ATF has a thing about private ownership a large destilling plant.

The ATF has no sense of humor about home-distilling, that is for sure!
Plus, what I usually brew will only make the smart want to lounge around in a shady spot and watch the world go by.

E-85 ethanol is 101-103 octane already

FYI E-85 ethanol is 101-103 octane already.

The "85" refers to it being 85% ethanol.
(They mix it with 15% gasoline so that you don't "accidentally" drink it?)

hehehe! BLAH! Not "hoppy" enough for me.
Check out Alternative Beverage at Alternative Beverage, homebrew beer making and winemaking
The owner, Jess, is a really nice guy and his knowledge of homebrewing exceeds comprehension. A very brilliant individual who is more than happy to answer any questions you may have and above all, he is honest. Early on, he could have easily talked me into springing for a plate chiller, but instead recommended a two-coil chiller that was 1/4 of the price. He was exactly right on his suggestion. It cools my wort to 70 - 80* within 25 minutes and saved me a bundle.
His kits seem to be much better than Northern Brewer too. I don't have any experience with anyone else though. Plus, he is within driving distance for me if I need to pick up something at lunch for a weekend brew.

Thanks Bull, I'll give them a look! Like you, I deal with a local supplier. Although the 100 mile round trip for yeast after you have already chilled the wert is a bit much!! Let's see - Planning, Planning, Plan ahead - thump!!
