Someone you WON'T see driving a Smart

OK, this isn't really about Smart cars at all, but I had to share. I found this article at Salon.com. I believe here in the South we'd refer to this fellow as a "dumb ass".

Man arrested just 12 hours after release from jail
---------------------------------------------------------

Aug 21st, 2008 | CLOVERDALE, Ind. -- A 22-year-old man was back behind bars about 12 hours after he was released from jail, accused of stealing a car and beer and leading police on a high-speed chase.

Darren E. Roberts was released from the Sullivan County Jail Tuesday afternoon after competing his sentence for auto theft.

But Indiana State Police say that early Wednesday morning, Roberts stole a 2004 red Ford Mustang in Linton, then drove to a gas station in Cloverdale where he allegedly stole some beer and fled.

Police chased the red Mustang at speeds of up to 105 mph on Interstate 70, until the car spun out and Roberts surrendered.

He's now being held in the Putnam County Jail without bond on a variety of charges. It's not immediately known if he has an attorney.

In jail he got a bed, 3 square meals, an excercise room, and the best health care the nation has to offer (they'll even complete a gender change that was put into motion before the arrest and conviction).

I'm guessing he just wanted to go home.

Dumb and Dumber

Years ago one of our dirvers (courier business) had his vehicle stolen by some guy who just got out of jail - which was right around the corner. But the jailbird probably wouldn't have gotten away with it if the driver had not left the keys in the car! Police did not catch up the the guy till the Texas state line.

Why Texas when the Mexico border is 30 minutes away?

Had a friend in High School that was in juvenile detention for breaking into a church (another story). While there over night he met a kid in for his 14th conviction for stealing car batteries. Talk about a one track mind. This was back in '75, how much would a used car battery really be worth? Guess this, and the joy ride above are important to people with a different perspective on life!

I guess the Smart is not a vehicle one normally associates with high speed chases.
