I have been motivated to post on this subject several times, however each time "jwight" posts ahead of me, expresses what I think also and pretty much in a better way than I would.
About the only thing that I observe that(to me) has been missed is;
When a "general public" posts, many show an attempt to be objective and fair to both sides of the issue.
When the post is coming from someone connected with law enforcement, there is a strong tendency to be only defensive of the police. The feeling I have had when I have called the police(non emergency) as well as when approached at a traffic stop, many times(NOT ALL) I have gotten the feeling that 'Police' come from a different planet and are sent down here to control us earthlings, never mind our 'funny little laws'. Example: If you don't give permission for a search, "There cannot be any other reason than you have something to hide".
You don't want to even think (out loud) of a sarcastic answer that is in kind, to the the statement/question the officer makes that is ludicrous, sarcastic, moronic, or most of all, just insulting to the intelligence of any normal person. 'Respect' can ONLY be earned
If I am approached or come in contact with a representative of law enforcement, I initiate my part of the conversation with respect and the demeanor reflecting the seriousness of the situation and I expect and deserve the same of the other party.
I'll get off my 'Soapbox' before I say something with which somebody might disagree.
The foregoing statements are protected by the First amendment (Thank heaven).
