Ok, thanks sheureka. So, I guess I'll email them tonight and let them know of my situation.

I'm guessing I'm out the $120 I paid for installation.

Why would you be out $120?

I wouldn't look at it that way NCC. The hardest part of the Area 451 install is running the cables and changing the pins in the connector block. That's the majority of where the labor cost probably came from, and none of that needs to be undone or re-done for the recall/repair.

My understanding of how they handle this is to send you a patch cable to replace your unit while it's shipping. You then ship the unit back to them, they reprogram it and send it back to you. All you need to do is disconnect a couple of plugs from the board and put a patch cable in it's place. (And do the reverse to replace the board after the repair.) If you can use an extension cord, you can do this minor maintenance on your own. The only side effect is that you're without cruise for the time it takes to ship/update things.

The real question is when is it worth the hassle to you to repair this minor issue. If you have a week where you know you won't be needing cruise coming up, you can probably delay returning it until then for repairs.

Thanks Bum-Bling-B and Woody. I have since seen they do provide the dongle you've mentioned. And, I'm sure they provide instructions. Without going to the installation instructions I think I recall the control unit is installed in the right rear, and I'm guessing that is what will have to be returned. I reckon I will be able to handle that.

Just my luck to be one of the few with a defective unit, I reckon.

Nobody has had a comment on the garbled voice guidance of the 8120. I guess that's typical, huh? I am not pleasantly surprised by that feature of the Kenwood unit. But, if it's typical, I guess I'll learn to live with it.

That's good you have the jumper - just put that in there while your unit is out for repair...eazypeezy. Your unit should be in the right rear - unplug and plug in jumper in its place. Shouldn't be too much more to it than that.
