This has been a very confusing issue. The dealership told me that the tank has a capacity of 8.7 gal, which includes the 1.3 reserve. When the tank goes down to 1.0 - 0 then you've run out of gas.
However, on 2 occasions I put in about 9.4 gallons of gas - I did not top up the tank.
I think the tank is 8.7 + 1.3 for a total of 10 gallons. Anyone else have similar experiences?
Yes, there are probably 15 threads with the same question... it seems this is more visible on a small tank and a lot of people are noticing the discrepancy. What I personally suspect is the gas pump is giving you 8 gallons and counting out 9 or 10. Whether by intentional fraud or by accidental miscalibration, it is possible that a pump is not accurate. This sort of problem led to states requiring inspection stickers on all the pumps decades ago, and inspectors are so overworked they can't inspect well enough. I've personally had this happen to me - somehow a gas pump put 19 gallons into my 17 gallon Grand Am tank which sill had 4 gallons left in it, so either my tank swelled up or something wasn't right with the pump.
Try getting a 5 gallon gas can and filling it to the 5 gallon mark, and compare to the pump. Then pour the 5 gallons of gas into your car (make sure you're low enough that you can fit more than 6 gallons in - never overfill).
The tank is officially 8.7 gallons. 7.4 gallons normal, 1.3 gallons for "reserve" which is really just where the warning light would come on older cars. There is no 10th gallon.
One more note on this: I did run out of gas once, because I thought I could go past the '0' gal point.
When AAA came by they gave me 3 gal, then I drove immediately to a gas station and got 6.6 gallons, or 9.6 gal total.
Coincidentally, it was the same station where I recorded the 9.5 gallons. It is the Chevron station at the corner of Castro and Market in San Francisco.
I think I should report this....I wanted to tell the station but I didn't have time.

Total is 8.7, not 10......counts down the last 1 gal. in .1 increments and flashes at you......BTW I have also found a station that has "miscalibrated" pumps near my house......in the process of confirming it so that I can be sure before I report them (pretty blatent though)....
Hmmm...now I'm not so sure. I used to be in the camp of "It holds 8.7 gallons total, and the manual is just poorly written when it talks about a 'reserve' of 1.3."
However, as far as I can recall, snowy is the only one who has actually reported running completely out of gas, then filling with more fuel than the car is "assumed" by all of us to hold.
Perhaps it really does hold 10 gallons? The reported error at his local gas station would be pretty blatant.
If it does hold 10 gallons, it's a ridiculous system that counts down to 0 but still has 1.3 gallons left.
Today I showed 0.1 left and put in 8.6. But that is not confirmation of the tank size really, just confirmation of my assumptions.
Who would like to volunteer to be the next to run out of gas and give us a good answer?

AHHHHHH! I'll pass!! Thanks!! Although years ago, when I was a "slightly" dishonest teenager, I frequently pumped more gas into a tank than it could POSSIBLY hold! Thank goodness I never got caught! Of course, I'm sorry I did it NOW, but back then I needed the extra cash! It was fairly common, and blatant, to "hang the pump!"
It is confusing to me as well. Is it a 10 gallon tank or is it a 8.3 gallon tank? Then the reserve would come out of that total...
A dealership technician who has had the official smart training told me that the absolute maximum system capacity is 10 gallons. Someday I am going to fill up and run out, then refill from zero and see how much I can put in it.
as a owner of a gas station, all of our pumps are checked VERY often by the state. We have every pump ..pumping over even if its a VERY small amount. And in the past 15 years when we did find the pump UNDER pumping it was very small, and I mean small. You can look at each pump for test date to be sure it was test at some time. And with the digital pump, I would like someone to tell me how A STATION can change the scale. We have a company thats on call 24 hours a day to maintain our pumps...filters, water, leaks....
but I will be checking on the next fill up, but I get gas at half tank so I will have to stop and wait until the light blinks
Elsewhere in the world, the tank is described as follows:
UK brochure 2007 – “Tank capacity/of which reserve in l 33/5” (8.72USg & 1.32USg)
Spanish brochure 2007 – “Capacidad del depósito/reserve en l 33/5”
Canadian brochure 2006 – “Fuel tank capacity 22 liters (5-liter reserve)” (5.81USg & 1.32USg. The 450 tank was smaller.)
Euro Operators Instructions –
“Fuel tank
“Capacity 35 l
“of which reserve 5 l”
(9.25USg & 1.32 USg. It actually says 35 liters not 33, a possible mis-print.)
I note that the reserve indicator on the instrument panel is located to the left of the “0” mark at the end of the last segment. I would think that if reserve was included in the 8.7g the reserve indictor would BE the last segment, or the “0” would be to the left of the symbol. I’m with the 10g crowd – 8.7g service fuel and 1.3g additional reserve.
