Just an update to my original post.
I had my 10000 mile service done yesterday. I had done the oil change myself before the sevice, the service manager didn't care if I did it myself and said it wouldn't void warranty as long as everything was documented. Changed the cabin filter and also lubed the shifter while it was there. The cost was $61. Not bad, I don't think.
The hardest part was diving almost three hours each way.

Are you saying that you did your 10,000 mile service yourself or that you had it done by the dealer for $61. If it's the latter, I want to find that dealer!
since the warranty is only 20K miles on the smart - i felt it was worth the $87 on the 10K checkup to have the dealer go over the vehicle and check a number of things i wrote down based upon problems other have reported. had them check the battery connections and battery voltage, had them check the sunshade for operation and lubricate it, had them check the rear glass microswitch/latch, had them check the gear shift for proper lubrication, etc.
while you can save a few dollars by doing an oil change yourself you don't necessarily get the benefit of inspection and warranty repairs doing it yourself. since i only get two of these before the vehicle is out of warranty - i personally think that doing your own oil change at 10K and 20K is penny-wise and pound-foolish.
and FWIW - it was more than an oil change - the spent a good deal of time on the vehicle with it up on the lift, they took it on a road-test, they washed it, etc. it was not a typical Juffy Lube 15min affair. prob took about 90 min or so start to finish.
Which dealer in Mass did the 10,000 mile service for $87?
I live in CT, but have family in the Boston area & will go visit them & coordinate a service while I'm there for $87! My dealer wants $228.

At my 10000 mile checkup, the dealer did all the service, except the oil change, which I did. LaVista smart ( Performance Auto) in Omaha was the dealer.
I may do the same thing as Smartah, I need to see what the MN dealer charges if I do my own oil change. If its no difference in price then I will just let them do it.
Smart of Winston Salem, NC charges $235.00 and admitted that there is not much to the 10,000 mile check. Oil, Filter, charcoal air filter for cabin air, and a general look over to see if everything is ok.....
I will not be using the dealer, warranty or not.... this is just short of stealing!

If everyone agrees that the 13-point check is unnecessary, which must involve some labor, why not just skip it & only get the scheduled oil change & filters (oil & A/C) for which I think all dealers only charge about $90 - give or take a few bucks?
