6 Month/7500 mile Check-up?

My 10,000 service at Cherry Hill Smart Center yesterday

here were a couple. Back in the early days, this was a pretty common DIY for service, something about some gear debris and other stuff made it worthwhile.

You are correct it doesn't have ATF, but the manual trans does in fact have Gear Oil.

I don't know why people are replacing the gear oil that soon, its not break in oil. Also, smart cars have a an automated slave cylinder so no clutch fluid (aka brake fluid) is used.

I got a "check engine" light at 8,000 & change miles, and since my smart needed the 2.0 upgrade anyway, I made the 2.5 hour trek to Bobby Rahal in Pittsburgh. They are really a first class operation and I was lined up between a new Jaguar and a Bentley Convertible and was promptly shown to a truly unbelievable Customer Waiting Area. I was called in shortly and told that I might as well get the 10,000 service done and was quoted $165. They didn't know that I had already changed the oil and filter at 2,000 and 7,000, but cheerfully put in a new air purge valve, new larger battery and all the stickers and books. My visit was a $0 cost pleasure other than the 5 hours on the road ( I knew this when I bought the car - not Rahal's fault). Reading this thread: "$89.95 to change two tires, $40.17 for wiper blades, $11.00 qt for Mobil 1, $6.24 for 2 units(?) of wiper fluid - $240, $250, $260 for 10m service WTF! Boy am I glad that I can do basic (and more) maintenance on my 4 cars! The dealerships must be letting the shop produce the cash flow necessary to survive in these tough times. The person with the Jag was delighted that her visit "only" cost her about $1,200 for what she called a routine checkup. I realize that most people either can not or do not want to change oil and filters, rotate tires and such, but they are paying DEARLY for the convenience of having those things done by the new car dealer. I will smile cheerfully doing my 12,000 oil and filter change for about $25.00.

OC1, where did you wind wipers that all three were less than $40 (or was that each?) and where did you find them at all? I hate the new card where you have to buy the entire arm! Wasteful and expensive!

Haven't needed wipers yet, but if they are $40 I will have to splice on some GM arms or something. Maybe I can "wind" some on the internet for less.

You don't need to change the plugs at 30k... unless you want to. Thats just Daimler being Daimler.
