I was told the 20K service would run to about 400.00 at the Smart Center in Tysons. I too wonder why such an elaborate cost, but seriously i am going to see about replacing the Air Filter in my car now since i am at around 19,500 miles anyway. My gas milage is not like it has been and well little things do add up fast.
E- let me know if you find someone else in the DC area who would do the 20,000 service for the warranty. I bought my Smart from the Lindsay group in Alexandria and I'm sure they'll charge at least what Tyson's charges. That's quite a bit over my budget for a "new" car. I've got just under 15,000 so I'm expecting to have to get the 20K done in the spring.
[QUOTE=forestacademy;296851]Why go to your dealer while the car is under Warranty.
..."So if you put a trained smart eye onto the car during that 20K service and they do that inspection, they may find something,"...
With all due respect, that's simply a service department line. Bring your car to the dealer for its first and second services and most folks will simply end up paying a large bill for mundane fluid and filter changes. There's no secret inspection or testing. You might simply get an eyeballing that everything seems okay.
Sure, smart techs may see a loose wheel, or a leaking oil pan, but these cars are relatively new. I'd bet the great majority of smart owners having service at a smart dealer receive no big surprises (...other than the bill) when they pick up their cars.
Case in point: my early '08 smart has been to the dealer FOUR times for repairs. All of the visits were scheduled by me and had to do with warranty issues discovered by me ("instant on" radio replacement, sunshade replacement, and TWO visits for the misaligned rear spoiler/ hatch glass: they fixed the spoiler, and apparently ignored the misaligned hatch glass during the same visit. I had to return to have the hatch glass aligned to factory spec. So much for the trained eyeball...
Just had my 20k done at Chandler (AZ) Smart. Parts pricing was almost identical to what Carl listed as charged in San Francisco. Total parts were $155.30 and labor was $156.00. Plus "shop supplies" whatever that is of $15.60 plus tax $13.34 = Total of $340.24. The Edmunds site estimate for this work done in Phoenix was $236.60 so the dealer's charge was substantially higher. My 10k service at this dealer was $184.84.

Wow! Those who have the time and ability to perform specified, routine, mundane, maintenance clearly save cash.

Not really. Selling cars is what dealerships are all about. If they don't sell cars, they don't survive. Otherwise they're just a costly repair garage and will certainly lose customers from unreasonably expensive service and go out of business anyway. Overhead is too high.
Nope. Warranty and TSB issues only, for me. My relationship with smart is specific to the terms listed in my new-car purchase contract.
I service my fortwo to factory spec (with dated receipts, of course, ....and actually exceeding requirements)-- and smart handles the warranty and TSB repairs as specified.
That's the agreement. I honor my half---I expect smart to honor their half.
Just came back from my 20,000 mile service after 13 months. Did not change air filter (I have a K&N filter), did not change batteris in keys and did not replace brake fluid.
Total cost with a $30 allowance offered by dealer for service over $200 was $214.54. This was at the Mercedes dealer in Englewood, NJ. They seem to have always been fair and reasonable even when I had my Mercedes'.
I just canceled my service with SmartCenter of Lynnfield MA. I was told yesterday that my "B" Service was going to run me $589.95. I just emailed their service manager to cancel my appointment and explained to him how outrageous their price is. If this price was given to me in error, I'll let you know. I'm curious about what his response will be.
Just got a very prompt response from the service manager. He explained that I was given the price for a Mercedes and that the price for a Smart is $299 which is much more reasonable to me.
