Gas pumps vary

There may be a federal standard for how gas pumps are supposed to work, but I have personally seen a difference between pumps, sometimes at the same station... maybe their shutoff triggers are slightly different or aged, one pump is used more, etc. At one station I visited, the closest pump to the entrance rang up 19 gallons in a car with only a 15.7 gallon tank. I stopped getting gas there. When measuring gas mileage, your best bet is to use something like a ScanGauge, or fill the car at the same exact pump 5 times and average out the readings over time. Plus, your first tank isn't enough to judge MPG... drive it more, it will probably improve.

When you fill up your car dont set the pump on the fastest setting to fill up fast as the pump might shut off prematurely. Set the clicker at the slowest fill and stop when it shuts off

My mpgs vary from fill up to fill up. the lowest I got was 21.7. and the highest was 48.2. so I know there are times the tank doesnt get filled up all the way. I average a little above 40 usually.

I certainly NEED to stop OBSESSING about my mileage as this little mind game is starting to annoying me, its taking the joy out of driving it always wondering if my mpg is getting better. - I know how much it usually gets - so it's time to put the top down, worry less and start enjoying more!

While 22 sounds low I wouldn't panic just yet, let's see what your second tank results are...my experience is similar to SMART...I'm getting 25-29 depending upon driving conditions and how much I stay on the pedal...I like to drive my car, and coming from a pickup truck with 11 mpg...I'm happy with 25 so its all relative...just enjoy!

My mileage from the start - I keep a spreadsheet in my Blackberry and fill it out whenever I fuel.

Suburban driving environment, mostly in Auto mode, but with generous throttle application. Definitely NOT driving to maximize economy.

38.18
34.60
35.58
32.96
36.22
41.88 - Interstate @ 70+ MPH
42.24 - Ditto
35.71
35.62

Overall average = 37.02 MPG
