My wife and I are getting some great mileage. 42 miles round trip times 5 days a week and we are using only 4 gallons of gas. It's 55mph no stop and go traffic, no stop signs or stop lights. We have 2800 miles on the car.
The tank was full, and at the empty I had 203 miles on it..... Was driving 20 miles on hwy and about 5 local every day, 25 miles total TY
If the 5 local is 2 or 3 short trips while the engine is cold, then the super low mpg is normal. I bought a scangauge to figure out why I was getting 26 mpg and I found that on my 2 mile trip in the morning and 2 mile back at lunch, I would get about 25/26. If I drove until it was warm, the exact same trip was 40 or more. I then tried the same trip with our Prius and got the same results (23 cold, 52 warm)
Ok..as mentioned before, my first tank was 21mpg, 2nd 23mpg, all city driving in manual mode, never above 3000rpm. Took it to the dealer empty, they filled it up and said to bring it back at 1/2...did that today, 83 miles on 1/2 tank. This time all in auto, instead of manual. They said it was the lowest mileage they've heard of, I'll find out tonight what they say.
Are you in an area that's using a gas/ethanol mix? Seems I read a thread in here that stated the mpg was a bit less with the mixed fuel. Still seems awfully low though.
I am not sure what is wrong with the engineering of the new cars compared to what I am used to driving. Cold weather has always and will always affect mileage with the technology where it is today, but the extremes you guys are talking about are insane. To get 50% less mileage because it is cold outside? Are you serious?!?! I drive a 98 Saturn SC2 currently (manual), The lowest I have ever gotten in all the time I have driven the car is 32MPG (lead footing like a beast) and the highest I have gotten is around 37MPG (doing everything in my power to get better MPG). I live in North Florida, so most of the year is warm, but we do have some cold freezing weather from time to time and I never saw a extreme drop like you guys are talking about with your smarts. I have never heard of such an array of mileage from the same engine/ same car. Are people not doing their math right? Is the engineering really that bad that some cars are spectacular while other are horse sh....well you get what I mean.

most are talking about the engine not coming up to temp on short trips rather than outside temp
... To get 50% less mileage because it is cold outside? ... .
My comment was based on using a "Scangauge" which gives you the current mpg and current radiator water temperature so my 26mpg was just for a 2 mile period. I suspect that the mpg that you are reporting is the mpg for a tank of gas of which only a small of it with a cold engine. But if you only drive a car a short distance to work and then home at the end of the day, then the millage will be very bad even if you have a Prius hybrid. By the way, my comments about a cold engine are one that is at outside temperature (like 50 degrees) vs warmed up at 185 degrees.
Dunno guys, I got 54 per gallon on my first tank, and this one looks to be closer to 59. Mixed stop and go and highway driving. Funny thing is, the car is still 'new'.
Let's refrain from making personal accusations and let me also add that my normal gas mileage is 25 -27 in my smart.
When I get my smart, if I only get 26 mpg I will be royally pissed! When I reserved I was under the impression it would get over 50. I've come to accept it will only get around 40. But if it only gets in the 20's and is the size of a golf cart, weighs less than 2,000 lbs and only has a 3 cylinder 1 liter engine!!! Man no way!! Please, please tell me you get way better than that.
