Our Cabrio did 42MPG on the first tank right out of the box. Seems to do about that or a bit better now that it's getting loosened up a tad.

If your fuel consumption is excessive, and 26mpg IS that.... I would have the dealer go over the car to determine where the problem is. The oxygen ratio voltage and air temperature/ density information used by the engine control computer is possibly in error due to sensor problems or whatever? Or the fuel delivery system is pumping un-used fuel overboard?

Gots to be SUMTHIN, cuz that little engine doesn't use that much fuel at a normal mixture ratio no matter how heavy yer foot might be.

Sure ya ain't gots the parkin brake on ?

:-))

My first tank seemed like 35 MPG but who knows what the dealer put in.
My second reads 42 but I was really trying to keep AC usage down and drive mellow. My daily commute is 11 miles with about three stops.

Is it a wash to let it warm up?

I was not clear in my previous post.
Normally when one measures mpg it is based on a full tank of gas. That full tank of gas represents a lot of different conditions and normally the time spent warming up the engine is a very small part. But I was addressing that small part.
In the morning my smart goes from about 50 degrees to about 175 in a couple of miles. In those couple of miles my smart averages about 26mpg. In the first couple of blocks much less. Once the car is warm, I get 40+ mpg. This afternoon, I got 49 on a freeway trip.
The exact same behavior is true of our Prius also. Other posters in other threads have agreed that this "warmup behavior" is normal with other cars also.

Is this the car under discussion?

PS - River Silver Metallic seems to be a color description used for UK smarts, not those in the US. Where is the car located?

They said it was the lowest mileage they've heard of, I'll find out tonight what they say.
PLZ let us know cause it sounds like I have same issue......

As mentioned before I also have extremely low mileage....between 23-30 mpg. SF dealer says they don't know what's wrong, took it in for the day 1 week ago, said today that they have others cars in complaining of the same problem. No 4 fill up I got 30 mpg, best yet. Then 57 miles on first blip (all freeway at 70mph), and I thought yippeeee!!! 2nd blip 12 miles, 3rd blip 18 miles and 4th blip 20 miles, so last 3 blips 50 miles approx 3 gallons...totally unacceptable. all city stop and go driving all in auto and very very light footed.
So I'd suggest call the dealership and take it in...the more cars they see the quicker they'll solve the problem. Iris

I'm getting better and better MPG as I put mileage on the car. I'm at 3700 miles and I just broke into the 350 miles on 1 tank club and I didn't take it easy.

I'm actually trying to choke the car performance wise by the neck. I wish I could turn TC / ESP off and slide around corners.

Ms. Bea-

It sounds like your problem is the stop and go traffic. You are getting 30 mpg in stop and go traffic. That is really good. My Avalon got 27-29 mpg on the highway, but in stop and go traffic, more like 10-15 mpg. I get a bit poorer gas mileage than some people on this forum and I chalk it up to my conditions:
1. High winds
2. Slight hills where the incline can go for miles
3. Ethanol in my gas (10%)
4. I like to drive over 75

When I drive on a straight stretch with no wind going 45-55 mph, I get over 50 mpg.
My average mpg is 36.

No car is going to get 45 mpg in stop and go city traffic.
