6000 miles on my Smart Pure, Always put super premium gas in, always driven safely...check engine light on for a week and now the shifter button is stuck and I can barely move the thing from parking and if I do, it takes me almost 10 minutes to just get the button back into parking. I am not liking this a bit.
What has the dealer said when you called them about the check engine light?
Open and close the gas cap. I did that, no change, light still on. My major concer is the shift button issue. Lubrication perhaps? I will let them figure it out, it is still under warranty, get it fixed and sell the car, that simple.
WOW . . .
That sounds a little extreme!
What other problems have you had? Surely you've had many. This problem must be the straw that broke the camel's back. You couldn't be ready to sell your car simply due to this . . . could you?
BTW, tons of info on this site about sticking shifters.

I don't understand your post about selling the car. If you get an engine light, or if your shifter is sticky, you take it to the dealer and they fix it and you drive off. I've never had a car that didn't need some dealer attention every once in awhile (oil change, tire rotation, tail light replacement) What's the big deal? You take a newspaper with you and have a cup of coffee while they fix it.
Selling the Smart seems a little extreme, It kinda reminds me of the time someone sold the new car they just bought cause their gas tank was getting low and it told them to fill up. "What an outrageous demand!, I am not putting up with this car!"
There was a guy here at work that did that. Got extreme and sold hit TDI Jetta due to he kept having problems with it. I told him, you did get one of the last ones that they were selling to the US that year, that was in 07. He said he had about 5 problems with it and it cost him about 2k in money out his pocket due to the stuff that broke was not under warranty. Sounds like you find a good warranty and stick with the car. If it is that bad, go down to your local Autozone or some place and have them do a FREE OBD2 check. They tell you if it's the damn gas cap. If it is not, you take it back to dealer and Say WTF! Fix it. Customer is always right. Kick them in the A$$. As for the gear shifter sticking, I don't even have mine yet and have read about it here on the forums. Probably be the first thing I do when I get my car. Grease the shift nob and probably fixed before it becomes a problem.
Hit 7,000 on our pure and had door latch replaced.
To be fair I have yet to own any NEW car that didn't have to go back at least once for service while under warranty during the first year of ownership.
Cars purchased new:
Honda CRX rear hatch release
Honda Civic power door lock
Honda Accord A/C low pressure line not installed correctly
Ford Festiva bad MAF sensor and wiring harness
Chevrolet Tracker blown a/c line, broken timeing, chain, broken door restraint plus a front crossmember corrosion safety recall
smart Pure defective driver door latch
so about par for the course so far....and that's what warranties are for!
