I would think they are referring to the 450 MB engine. New 451 hasn't been out long enough to tell.

If I remember correctly, a high percentage of 450 MB engines pooped out near 80K - the reason was an issue with the valves. The company instituted prevention type maintenance - check the valves at 60K - and this for the most part solved the problem. Now if the maintenance checks are done on the valves, coolant level, regular oil changes at I think 10K (working from memory here) then the Smart 450 happily hums along well into old age, above 120K. We'll have the Mitsubishi engine here, so we'll likely start with the same maintenance program and we'll likely have the same success.

I am thinking the relativley low motor life in the gen 1 andf gen 2 are the major reason to go with Mitsubishi vice reworking the MCC design

It was not so much the rebuid at 80~90K that was the pisser but the cost to do it... sounds like they had a heat control and a oiling issues.

My gut says we get a 100+K= motor but not a 175,000 or longer one...

The internal component dimension of the 1 liter mitsu motor are fairly impressive.... Where the mcc usualy snuffed the bottom end or a cyclinder... I think we can expect top end or cam drive issues first

Of serious concern to me is the expense of adjusting lifters... from the video of the 4 cylinder version mitspower posted of this motor

The cups/shims (on top of valve stem and under twin cams) need removed and new size inserted every 50~60 thousand miles... no biggie if ignored because the design means reduced valve lift.... hopefully not really enough to seriously effect motor operation... but max power will be down some
