Almost Too Late at 20k !

But I brought the car in to Discount Tire to have their techs confirm my worst fears.

The rears have an inside ridge just starting to wear in.

The fronts are badly cupped, also inside, this what we are hearing as road roar.

The partial fix? Rotate per handbook than inspect at another 6k. If no help--- tires must be turned over on their rims.

Discount tech says rears will be saved, fronts are doubtful, but worth a try.

Smart folks must rotate tires at 10k or less...

So now I learn. DUH!! A2Jack.

Note to self, Rotate Tires on rims with 10K Service Got it

Good tip,
This may be an argument to use same rims for regular and snow tires since you have to take them off the rims anyway, Just rotate them when you put them back on in the spring.

If at all possible can you post a pic of what to look for? Our car is at 22k and I'm going to be at the dealer tomorrow and want to know what to look for. Heading on a 1500 mile trip this weekend and I don't want any suprises.

NM... found it...

Agree on the snows and flopping at change over time. I will do this when we have to buy new tires next year.

WD. No pix, sorry. We are deep in winter here
The Tire tech inspected by feel/touch. You might drop by a tire dealer and have them take a look as they know tires best. A2Jack

So since the sizes are staggered, just swap sides I assume? Thanks for the info.

Maybe someone needs to design a reversable Rim

Discuss.

I'm not going to rotate tires that still look and perform like brand new at almost 10,000 miles. The front tires only cost about $60.00 from tire rack anyway, so I can't imagine there is a significant cost benefit in having the rims & positions swapped so often. Much easier to just install new tires when needed.

Pete. The point is to rotate before wear starts to show. 18k is when I first became aware they were singing and thought it was just the road.

By the time one pays for new tires and mounting you have added another $300 to your cost of driving the car.

We pressed the car into work service as soon as we bought it and gas hit $4.00 a gal. We expected to run about 30k a year on it, as we do with our other cars. This was just an experiment to see how well the car would hold up. Most of our driving is city to city highway.

The tire issue was unexpected, being such a lite car. We normally get at least 60k on our tires. Even more on our 12" wheeled, Festiva's (5).
A2Jack.

i don't plan on rotating the tires either.
the tires aren't expensive and i'm not expecting 60K miles out of them regardless.

Why wouldn't you???? I have 22,000 miles on my original set and the tread still looks new... my brake pads look new and I haven't had a single serious issue... I don't think it's out of line to expect 50 - 60K from the tires... 40 - 50k from the brake pads.

And no I haven't rotated my tires... though I did have them remounted on my rims when the were painted.
