Alternator going out

My smart is currently in the shop with the alternator gone bad. Car is at 47,000 miles. Has anyone else replaced their alternator?

Other than your battery dying what are the symptoms?

Sluggish start. Sometimes it takes 5 - 6 tries before it start. The battery light came and stayed on this morning.

BB. Just a couple of questions here... Did you get the free battery upgrade? Do you have it in a Smart Center shop?

Expect the Shop to come up with one or more of "The Big Three $$$" parts replacements, as well as, maybe, fix the problem.

First step here should be to charge the battery. Next take a voltage output reading on the Alt (head lights on).

If alt is around 13-14 volts the problem could be as simple as dirty battery terminals.

Good luck. A2Jack

Yah you can unplug the engine comp. and trans with battery disconected. I wouldn't do it without disconecting the bat first.

Yes, i got the free battery upgrade. The battery is fine but not charging. I did bought the extended warranty and it's covered. Smart Center of Dallas has been pretty upfront with me and have not try to find other problems to fix other than the ones I have. If all goes well I'll pick it up tomorrow.
